it seems like the burglar was already running away when she shot. If so, that is not self defense.

If the burglar is already exiting the home, then let them go, they are no longer a deadly threat.

The story is entirely unclear when the shot was fired. It also doesn't say the "accused" was charged. Apparently this happened during a power outage so the would-be burglar probably thought nobody was home. Watch the video linked to the story and you'll get a better idea of what went on. Good shoot, bad shot. The police didn't seem too concerned about what she did.

Firing a shot like that is just so rude, she could have hit the bible he was carrying. And to think they won't exchange Christmas cards now. Next thing ya know burglars will have to start arming themselves against homeowners.

The burglar probably forced his way into the home in order to make enough money to enroll himself in classes so he could fulfill his lifelong dream of helping children. Had the woman sat down and had a polite conversation with the fellow who broke into her house while she was sleeping I'm sure she could have seen her way clear to give him her money and valuables for a worthy cause.

Homeowners emboldened with a firearm and the unrealistic expectation that they are secure in their own homes need to be educated on this matter. Door locks show that your really hate the poor. Next time she should leave out a plate of cookies and some milk.

never fire on anyone running away from you. If you shoot someone in the back you are probably going to jail...I mean after all we aren't the cops.

we shouldn't allow incidents like this to occur.

She ought to be sentenced to some range-time so that next time she doesn't miss.

/although if he was already fleeing she shouldn't have shot at all.

equals going toward other areas of my home that could be sheltering my family, or to grab a weapon, maybe taking that last ditch shot while exiting the door.

Is that a risk worth taking?

I don't know about shooting someone in the back, but I'd rather they exit as quickly as possible to avoid any last minute ideas of ducking into a bedroom, bathroom, hallway to regroup and recover the tactical advantage.

The defense of my home and is more important than the idea of being rude to an uninvited houseguest, and how it'd look to the homeowners association and others that like to sit in judgement of toters everywhere.
