http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2012/05/20/cbs-5-story-inspires-new-legislation-to-ban-bullet-button/SACRAMENTO (CBS 5) The debate over Californias strict gun control laws is about to heat up in Sacramento and its all because of what we reported a few weeks ago. When I saw the news I was absolutely horrified, said State Senator Leland Yee, referring to a CBS5 report about the so-called bullet button.
Its a modification that enables the magazine of a semi-automatic rifle to be removed quickly, with the tip of a bullet. Removable magazines in combination with other features like a pistol grip and telescoping stock are banned under California law. But the bullet button is legal because it doesnt work with your finger, so the magazine is considered fixed. The modification has allowed military style rifles like the AR-15 to proliferate in the state, something Senator Yee said has got to stop.
It is extremely important that individuals in the state of California do not own assault weapons. I mean that is just so crystal clear, there is no debate, no discussion, said Yee. Thats why the Senator is introducing a bill to ban the bullet button. What I am proposing is to essentially prevent any mechanism that would allow the conversion of an assault weapon into a way that you can fire these magazines upon magazines without effort, he said.
The senators bill is already in the cross-hairs of the Calguns Foundation, the states leading gun rights group. I am not sure the Legislature has an appetite to bite off something so large, said Calguns President Gene Hoffman, the creator of the bullet button. The real reason I designed it was because the original kind of ways to create AR-15s that were California legal were actually quite dangerous on the range. He said if a magazine is fixed, which is how California law requires it to be, bullets can jam. So the nice thing about the bullet button is that it allows you to remove the magazine and clear the jam, he said, arguing that it essentially makes them easier to handle. They they are lightweight, easy to shoot for women. Its more accurate.

How much of a hassle does he think it should be to field-strip a firearm?
Most modern weapons are designed so that they can be broken down into their major components for cleaning, without the use of tools such as screwdrivers. That has been the case for more than 100 years. The bolt-action Mauser Model 98, and its predecessors and all of its descendants, have ammunition magazines that are simple to disassemble without use of a screwdriver or wrench.
In fact, the MAGAZINE follower and floor-plate of most Mauser rifle variants are designed to be removed BY USING A ROUND OF AMMUNITION as a tool!
ETA the floor plate is at the bottom of this picture, which may not last long. The standard procedure for removing the plate from the rifle is to push a round of ammunition up through the hole, and depress a spring-loaded plunger. This allows the plate to be slid a fraction of an inch back, then it pops off easily.
ETA The obvious purpose (for those of us who understand how firearms function) of that provision is to allow the rifle to be quickly and safely unloaded. In the case of a bolt-action or even an AR-15, the only alternative would be to cycle the live rounds through the action, which would create a risk of an accidental discharge.

(60,567 posts)At shooting ranges, both during formal matches and general shooting, it's not unusual for the Range Safety Officer to call "Cease fire, cease fire!" which requires all shooters to IMMEDIATELY stop firing, unload their weapons, and step back from the firing line. Do you think someone should have to break out a screwdriver or a wrench in order to do that?
ETA it's been standard on the design of repeating firearms for more than 100 years to be able to remove ammunition with either no tool, or with a bullet tip (see my previous post right above yours.)

(6,185 posts)Must be depressing to have almost every court judgement and pretty much every legislative body telling gun control to get lost.
I can understand why more than ten years of that kind of news would lead to nonsense and nonsequiter posts again and again.

(26,613 posts)an 'assault weapon' is, as well as his explanation from his own knowledge as to why this made-up category of rifles is so horrifyingly dangerous.
I'd also be curious to hear him explain -- if BB-equipped rifles pose such a crystal-clear un-debatable public danger -- why did no one (including himself and law enforcement) notice the problem before that breathless news report? Where are the crimes, injuries, accidents, bodies, or blood-puddles that can be linked to the availability of bullet buttons?
