Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- Governor Mary Fallin signed into law the Open Carry/Omnibus gun bill, Senate Bill 1733. Senate Bill 1733 is an omnibus firearm bill containing significant improvements to Oklahoma gun laws, including allowing concealed carry permit holders the choice of open carrying.
Other important provisions include language prohibiting persons, property owners and companies from banning ammunition in locked vehicles; changing the immediate notification requirement when a permit holder is stopped by a law enforcement officer to notification at first opportunity while also greatly reducing the associated fine for non-compliance; a provision allowing people to carry firearms openly without a permit on their private property; and revisions to the current Oklahoma statute striking the word concealed from Oklahoma firearm permit citations and applying the lawful open carrying of firearms to Oklahomas firearms preemption law. Additionally, this legislation will allow Sooner State military personnel stationed outside Oklahoma to obtain an Oklahoma permit. This new law becomes effective November 1, 2012.

(883 posts)It's not perfect, but it improves so much on the current state of affairs, I'm thrilled. There's also a provision that says legal open carry cannot be punished as breaching the peace, creating a public disturbance or anything similar.
Law enforcement, of course, is absolutely sobbing over it. Mass confusion. Who's the good guy, who's the bad guy? A state senator and former officer actually said police will arrive on a crime scene and there will be 40 people standing around with guns. They all seem to be implying that Oklahoma cops are dumber than cops in the rest of the country, which, to be fair, I have no reason to doubt.

(15,396 posts)If enough Progressives would start OCin' to help it gain acceptance maybe we could once and for all show people firearms in civilian hands is a good thing.
Now get out there and exercise that right before some regressive decides that guns in holsters at soccer games is scary and intimidating and starts whining.

(12,194 posts)Not "we need to make gun carry a thing of the past".
Not "we need to make gun violence a thing of the past".
No qualifiers. No conditionals. No ifs ands or buts. Nothing to claim as misinterpretation, or room to claim you were quoted out of context.
Just simply "we need to make guns a thing of the past."
This is in fact, the first time I believe you've been completely honest about your position.
That being said...
Put your money where your big mouth is, and turn YOURS in first.
Or did you mean "we need to make guns a thing of the past (except hoyts).
Bookmarked.

(768 posts)that I need to give him a pass on this statement based on my own experience. In response to a direct question recently, I responded without qualifiers and conditionals impulsively/inattentively (in a state of fatigue) in a manner which made it appear that I don't oppose racist screeds on DU. *I* would be a hypocrite to go after Hoyt for this one.
My two cents.

(883 posts)Let it never be said that I didn't reach out in the interest of public safety.
We can remove handguns from the police and sheriffs departments first. They can continue to have long guns in their vehicles and headquarters, at the discretion of local voters.
In return for this, I would expect the machine gun registry to be reopened or abolished.

This is what you said:
"Well, we need to make guns a thing of the past."
Thats ALL you said, and thats ALL OF what you said.
One poster was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.
I'm not.
You knew exactly what you were posting when you posted it, and you knew exactly how it would be taken.
Just embrace it and be done with it, rather than trying to insult the intelligence of anyone that bothers to read it.
You own that statement, hoyt, and you own the crystal clear meaning attached to it.
And I will gladly refer to it in the future.

(54,770 posts)why should we expect our government representatives to be any less callous, belligerent, and the like?
I agree with you on war, but the citizenry arming up does noting to stop that. If you plan on arming up to stop the government, then you can leave your guns at home until the revolution arrives. But, you want. You'll come up with some rationale to carry your guns in public.

(56,912 posts)individuals make up the government and therefore are ultimately the ones responsible for its actions otherwise we are periously close to taxation without representation which is, iirc, what started this country in the first place.
All I am trying to do is put food on my table and protect me and mine. What we as a country are trying to do with this "protect our way of life" I am not so sure and therein lies all the debate . . . .

(17,502 posts)and has nothing to do with guns. Most of the Native Americans were killed by diseases such as small pox and other diseases they did not have immunity to. Some historians believe that some of it was intentional biological warfare. I honestly don't know enough to say either way.

(12,072 posts)There were some instances of deliberate infection but the vast majority was just the natural sweep of disease. Much of the Hawaiian population died from measles. In modern times when an uncontacted tribe is found about half of them die from the initial contact. Sorry, I don't have a link for that. I read it some years ago in National Geographic.

(32,073 posts)Would open carry deter people from doing ambush gun attacks?
ileus
(15,396 posts)One guy in the hospital said if more people open carried that crazies (not really dumb) would avoid attacking.
I tend to disagree, I believe crazies just start shooting without a care of if someone may or may not be armed. Most are expecting to die or kill themselves anyway.
OC may deter someone from an armed robbery, or physical attack.
I like OC I consider it the most progressive form of carrying a firearm for self defense.
