http://www.wlns.com/story/18211775/new-law-allows-residents-to-carry-stun-gunsGovernor Rick Snyder has signed legislation allowing Michigan residents with concealed pistol licenses to carry a Taser as a nonlethal form of self-protection.
It was one of several measures signed into law Tuesday by Snyder. Specialized training also is required to legally carry a stun gun.
Michigan joins 43 other states that allow residents to carry stun guns under certain circumstances.
Michigan law had banned the use of stun guns since 1976, with exceptions for police and some other personnel.
Laws that cover the use and licensing of concealed handguns in Michigan also apply to stun guns or Tasers.

(15,396 posts)Trayvon should've been carrying a taser.
I'll be watching for cases of people pulling a taser out & then getting shot by another "safety-minded" citizen.

A defender pulling a taser and being shot by the attacker? (An unsuccessful case of defensive taser use)
Somebody randomly pulling out a taser and being shot by a stranger? (Murder unless aggressive intent was apparent)
Or...?

(5,436 posts)The murders & killings by gun-lovers, and their gun culture, is something special to America.

(1,089 posts)Does that also apply to tasers, fists, knives, bottles, or any other implement that can be used to defend yourself from an attacker? It's not like violent crime is peculiar to the USA, just ask the natives of Knife Crime Island, Brazil, Russia, etc. Then look at other states where private citizens can own handguns, like Switzerland, Finland, and France, where the rates of violent crime are far lower than ours. Violent crime is the result of a sick culture, not the presence of any particular technology. Gun ownership does not correlate with violent crime -- violent societies do. If you disarm the USA today, they're still going to be far more violent than gun-rich peaceful societies.

(2,631 posts)Tasers have their uses. I'm certified on them and know from personal experience what they will and won't do to you. Problem is you only get one shot, one chance, then you have to go hands-on with it. If you hit your target, the publicly available model gives you thirty seconds to make like Jesse Owens. The police model has a much shorter cycle, buying you only enough time to get out your handcuffs. They're really great tools if used within the manufacturer's intended parameters.
They're no substitute for a gun, though, when things get really bad.

Whoever came up with the idea of marketing these things as "non-lethal" ought to have his ass lit up with an issue model (not a 1/4 voltage "trainer" every day.

(2,631 posts)When you're fighting someone to get them into cuffs bad things can happen. This is especially true when they're heart rate is cranking and they've been abusing their bodies with all manners of legal and not so legal street drugs. A Taser is no more likely to kill someone than having to beat them into submission. Anyone who knows how to use one properly will tell you the same thing. It's just another tool, and a handy one at that, but not the only way to solve a problem.

(2,997 posts)What I do have trouble with is the "non-lethal" terminology, since it can cause misconceptions in those that are just smart enough to be dangerous.
Being an attorney, I immediately look for the "DON'T HIT YOURSELF IN THE HEAD WITH THIS HAMMER11!!!!!ON1!!1E!11" solution.

(2,631 posts)That's the way we describe it in training. And yes, we do discuss at length the distinct possibility that the thing can cause death in very rare circumstances. Personally, I still think it's more humane and safer than using an impact weapon like an ASP or straight baton.
