Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumWhat is your home defense firearm?
What is your main go to firearm for the home?
Also where do you keep it?
My current favorite is my M&P 9c with a full sized 17rd magazine with the X-grip. I was marginal accuracy wise with my 9c until I bought the full sized mag, now it's like a totally different gun and I've revived it for the home defense role. I'm wanting to get a set of night sights for it now. At night it sleeps on my headboard with my 150 Lumen torch and my glasses.
We have two mini dachshunds that are caged trained that serve as great little alarm systems for our first line of defense.

(5,530 posts)The sound of chambering a shell cannot be mistaken for anything else in the universe.
But a trained ear can tell the difference between an actual round and the pinggy sound of no round being chambered...Not that you wouldn't be actually chambering a round.
Many will take issue with your decision to let the sound be a warning. That's your plan I'll take no issue with it since I also keep a 9mm carbine close by but without the magazine inserted or a round in the chamber.

(12,513 posts)Has a 7 round mag, and never leaves the bed nightstand drawer. Trapped in the bedroom with no way out if a late night intruder got in, it is comforting having an equalizer to keep whoever from cornering me without any way of defending myself inside my own bedroom.
geckosfeet
(9,644 posts)I keep it uncocked with one in the chamber. Night sights let me know right where it is. It has a rail mounted tactical light.
A fully loaded back up magazine is nearby. The pistol is reasonably well concealed, and positioned so that an intruder would not see the night sights in the dark upon entering the room.
ileus
(15,396 posts)of must haves....
Submariner
(12,513 posts)but it greatly diminishes the recoil that makes the regular 220 kick up higher. So, with the same glow-in-the-dark night sites that geckosfeet describes, it can stay on target easier for repeated shots.

(8,614 posts)no rail. As a carry weapon it is combined with 2extra mags on the off side. Loving Wife keeps"Her" Colt LW Commander by her side. When it gets dark then her 995 carbine w/red dot sight and my AR with light and night sights are found on the appropriate sides of the bed.
Loads are defensive, 230gr JHP in the sidearms, 50gr JHP (20rds) in my rifle and 145gr JHP in her carbine. There is also saddle pouches on both longarms a 30rd mag for mine and 2-10rd mags for her.

Generally, whatever I'm in the habit of carrying during the day I just keep it on the couter or nightstand.

IIRC, the technique is: hook the opponents shield with yours, wrench to the side, stab the gut with assegai, twist and wtihdraw.
While maintaining formation with your echelon. Very Greek/Roman of them. Hmmmm.....

(8,614 posts)and nearly as hard as iron! The assagia is forged with a blackthorn wood shaft, bound with rawhide with a loop that goes over the wrist. Unfortunately the shield is not bulletproof, a 485gr lead slug from a 450/577 Martini-Henry has no problem going through it.

I have never fired the fleschetts knowing they will ruin the barrel. The reason I use the 44 magnum in single action, it is also a hunting gun and am well practiced. I keep gun shoulder rig so I can use bat first. One 38 under the bed and pump shot gun ready in closet under lock and key. My go to rig is in a drawer in a locked room. Even though I have conceal carry permit I will not conceal carry. Firearms are not for use on humans. Home invasion will be met by stiff resistance human or otherwise I approach it as an either or situation.

Glock 26 in a fingerprint box on the nightstand in case of an attack after i go to bed.
Also a Western Bowie, Cold Steel gurka kukri, Gerber gator brush knife, and two LE style batons throughout the house, unlocked.
locked up, but close at hand is a Mossberg 590, an Iver Johnson side by side coach gun, and a H and R topper single shot 12 guage.
Hardened front entry to the house, and a security system, that both came with the house.
Two dogs round out the defense of my house.

(906 posts)We also utilize a Canine Alert System....a 60# Husky and her 100# Malamute backup. They really tune up on a stranger enters our home, and they're both very protective of the kids. (both habits are actively encouraged by me and my wife).
My EDC is a P245, my wife's is a P228, and we also have a Remington 870 Express 12-guage loaded with #3 buck.
Only had to clear the house twice when we had attempted breakins....dogs scared them away and the second time - based upon the bloody sleeve - I think the malamut tore a piece out of someone.

(2,997 posts)It rotates between a stainless CZ-75B, a 3"S&W Model 60-15, and a carbine configured Armalite Rifle clone.
I'm thinking of purchasing a 686 SSR to replace the CZ and the Model 60, relegating them to range and CC use, respectively.
Where exactly I keep them is a secret guarded by trained warrior-priest-guard-ninjas, but "accessible" will suffice for your purposes I suspect.

(2,631 posts)My favorite is a High Standard K12 Riot Gun with Federal low recoil "tactical" 00 Buck. Not that it matters all that much. I store it under lock and key.
My plan really revolves around keeping conflict and drama out of my life. It's a multi-layered approach that has worked for me so far. To me, shooting someone is a sign that things have really gone down hill fast.

(11,181 posts)T'would appear from the posts so far that most of our members lead normal lives and about a half dozen live in a state of siege. Must be the 51st state.

We're considering getting a gun, but it'll likely be a .22 pistol for target shooting, rather than for home defense.

(15,396 posts)I've pretty much decided the next pistol I buy is going to be a 22 for target shooting and getting the kids shooting a pistol for the first time.

(768 posts)"Wait a minute, Mr. Bad guy! I have to go to my vault and get my handgun! Nuh-Uh."
Today I concur with your sentiments. I never physically carried while at home until the personal experience of a (harmless) mentally challenged individual who wandered into my back changed my mind. While the event was statistically highly unlikely, statistics wouldn't have mattered much if he had been unstable and violent given the circumstances on that day.
