It was pointed out in 2022 that the picture in Michael Beschloss's tweet that year was taken on February 23, 1945. He never said it wasn't.

1. My Dad was there

floating in a landing craft waiting to load wounded, supples, and dodging kamikazes. He did not see the original flag but saw the second. He never forgot it. Load up, onward to Okinawa, and leave home before the invasion of Japan. He was home when the news came that Japan had surrendered. My Dad was 19.

2. My father, too. He was on an L.CT. They carried marines from the ship to the beach.

If you want to get an idea of this, Clint Eastwood's movie, Letters from Iwo Jima had a couple of seconds clip that was photographed by Japanese. It showed the LCT's coming towards shore and artillery shells, splashing in the water around them.

As I'm sure your father was, he was invited to, and attended the unveiling of the Iwo Jima memorial in D.C.
