I have a 1 year old black cat I adopted as a kitten from Lifeline (neutered & chipped)

We also have an 11 y/o female dachshund Cairn mix. They get along great but the dog doesn't like to play cat games. DH says we need a kitten for the cat to play with. I'm considering but not sold on the idea. Do male cats generally do better with male or female kittens or does it not matter?

5. I suspect that's the key

Before I got Sophie and Boudicca spayed they would get into some rough battles. Definitely not play fighting. After they had their surgery they got along just fine.

Madoc and Gryff are the same age and got neutered at the same time. It took Madoc a couple of days to really accept Gryff but now they are as if they were litter mates. Both get along with Arthur. Of course, maybe they are just relieved that there's just one kitten instead of four.

I had two females and they fought all the time. That’s just my opinion though. It was not a good experience.

9. I have two females. They don't pal around together well.

They tolerate each other because I slosh the squirt bottle when either hisses at the other, and they break it up.
Males I've had would get along with other males or females even to the point of curling up together. They could also eat alongside each other.

I just got a female kitten since I lost one of mine. I had two boys but now I have an adult male and a tiny female who apparently is the bravest of the two. The older male hisses at her but he will not hurt her. I foresee a couple more days of this then it will be over. I guess this is really no help at all. When I had 4 males they sprayed my house constantly, it was horrible. The female does not seem to make him want to do that. I hope you get better answers.

6. I was told the trick to avoid spraying is get them neutered before puberty

Gryff and Madoc were just shy of 5 months old when they were neutered. Neither have every sprayed.

Arthur's appointment is in 3 weeks. He'll be 4 months old.

I am sure that is true. I have a brand new baby girl right now. A friend found them on her farm and I took one since one of my old guy just died. Can't get over that but she is precious.

Thanks for the info. I never knew.

Her mom and dad are going out of town. I'm really looking forward to watching her and Arthur together. They had so much fun last weekend when she was here for just a few hours.

have gone missing due to coyotes. Hence he is going stir crazy, especially watching the dog go in & out all the time.

The last 2 cats we had were Ferrell cats from the same litter (male & female) that were separated from their mom during a tropical storm. They both sprayed therefore were banished from the kingdom and became strictly outdoor cats. They never strayed far from the house & lived 17 years.

11. When we moved here about 20 years ago there were feral cats and dogs

The feral animals were very bold. I was afraid the wild dogs would go after my new lambs. As more and more coyotes moved in, the cats all disappeared. Then the pack of wild dogs that use to roam the streets became smaller. Then they disappeared too. Now I never see feral animals.

I hope it's because people are taking their unwanted pets to the ASPCA and not leaving them to fend for themselves on a back country road to be eaten by coyotes.
