Related: About this forumMy dog was diagnosed with Cushing's disease a few years ago ...
She was listless and her hair became wirey and started falling out and left her tail completely hairless.
I took her to the Vet and he prescribed Vetoryl, a recently approved medication for Cushings.
Her hair grew back, soft and full and she's perky and happy.
She's 13 years old now and still enjoys romping around with puppies at the dog park even though she has some arthritis.
It's not cheap, it's a daily medication and she needs it for the rest of her life, but it has completely changed her life.
Just wanted to let you folks know about it if your dog comes down with Cushings.

(17,049 posts)Boston Suzie to cushings. She had lost her eyesight and became incontinent. We had her eye drops, pain meds and diapers at the end.
She was too far along. I am so happy that you found something that works! We were heartbroken over our baby! Modern pet medicine has become so much better!
Hugs to you and your baby!

(9,494 posts)He was diagnosed about 15 years ago. We think he was 8 at the time and it took at least a year to find a Vet to diagnose him correctly. It was in the dark ages of treatment and the monthly blood testing and constant monitoring of the effects of the medication kept me running and broke. But....he was the sweetest little thing in the world and he really loved life. He was worth it. He lived four more happy years.
I finally ended up working with the head endocrinologist at AMC on Happy's Cushings. At that time he was considered the world authority on Cushings in animals. Since then I have met several Cushings dogs and treatment is so much better. Even local Vets seem to know what they are doing now. That was not true a decade ago. Only constant diligence on my part saved my dog from the mistakes of well intentioned Vets.
There is anecdotal evidence that Cushings is caused by a genetic predisposition triggered by environmental factors.

(51,493 posts)She took Lysodren. It made an amazing difference. She also had lupus and diabetes and went blind with cataracts, had surgery and then got glaucoma. She lived 5 years with all of that!

(22,169 posts)I lost a dog to Cushings in 2000 (Misty). Anipryl was the only thing available then. It didn't help her at all and she passed away one month after starting on it. She was 13.5 years old though and a Lab/Shepherd mix.
