Related: About this forumMy dog may have cancer
My elderly Norwegian Elkhound started holding his right upper lip in an unusual way...kind of like snarling but not....so I took him to the vet. Couldn't go in with him because of COVID. Vet calls me in the parking lot and says his lip is like that because it's catching on a tooth, which is because his jaw is slightly out of alignment. She said the reason for that is there is a hard mass along his jaw somewhere that could possibly indicate a recent break that healed wrong...but she said he would've shown signs if that happened and he did not. Could be cancer in the bone, sedation and x-ray scheduled for this morning.
So of course I'm sitting there with tears on my face when the vet tech comes out to get me to sign the estimate. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see what's going on. I hate this.
I got him from a shelter in Maryland when I set out to find a black female lab. This story is often used to remind people why I can't be sent out to find something without supervision.

(32,971 posts)I went like a young child when the vet told me Princess Peanut had mast cell cancer.
I recall the hollow feeling in my chest.

(22,063 posts)I'm so sorry.
I've lost a number of pets to cancer the past several years. I keep wondering if its because the diagnostics have gotten better, or there's something else going on.
Sending and your pupster good vibes.

(2,186 posts)Should be close to a week. Vet said his jaw is so soft that she's concerned he may break it by eating. So soft food only until we see if there is anything that can be done. $1350 so far today but he's worth it. Thanks for the kind thoughts!

(24,223 posts)and we took her to the vet and she had fractured it because her body was racked with bone cancer.
This was on Christmas Eve 2.5 years ago.
We got to spend one more night with her before the hard decision was made.
She was in so much pain and we had to lose her on Christmas.
I am still in mourning for Raven and miss her every day.
Still wish we'd had more time together. I have tears just writing this.
We waited a week, a long lonely week without a dog, and went to visit several shelters the next weekend on New Year's Eve day.
A beautiful 2.5 year old Siberian Husky, Ginger, had been surrendered four days before we walked in and we all fell in love with each other.
She joined our home the next day.
She just turned 5 years old last month.
She is a sweetie and everyone loves her
I love her so much but still miss Raven every day.

(2,186 posts)I had a lab that I loved dearly (Mandy) and she, too, got cancer and passed. Hudson's previous owner had passed away and he ended up at the shelter. I like to empathize with him--we both lost our other buddies but found each other. I'm glad you found Ginger!
