Does anyone have a good recipe for skunkwash?
We're dyin' here!
A LITTLE WHILE LATER...
Thanks to all of you for responding in a timely manner! I knew I could count on DU!
So the Hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/dish soap recipe worked. We had all of that on hand so wasn't that big of a deal once we got to washing her down, poor old girl.
She went out to pee and that funny looking kitty that doesn't belong in the garden got her.
Now that we can all breathe freely again, the entire host of species living on this property thank you all!

(13,159 posts)According to the Humane Society
1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution (found at any pharmacy or supermarket) 1/4 cup of baking soda. 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap.
Bathe the dog twice, paying attention to scrub the hardest hit areas thoroughly
ETS- Back in the 70s we had a dog get sprayed, and we went through gallons of tomato juice washing her - It may work on short haired dogs but our German Sheppard stunk all spring

(115,267 posts)or isn't there enough of it? I've always heard tomato juice was the way to get skunk scent off dogs.

(30,655 posts)but the only dishwashing soap to use is Dawn.
No, the peroxide does not bleach the dog's fur. We have used it on a black dog.
Put all the ingredients into an empty gallon milk container. Shake the container. It does not hurt the dog and it works.

(2,608 posts)Step 1: Keep Fido outside
You'll probably want to keep your dog outside while you get it together so they don't carry the smell indoors. Check their eyes; if they're irritated or red, immediately flush them with cool water.
Step 2: Mix the Ingredients
Mix together:
1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide (available at any pharmacy)
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap
De-skunking Shampoos on Amazon.com
Wearing rubber gloves, wash your dog with this solution immediately after they've been sprayed. DO NOT get the solution in their eyes. (If you don't have peroxide, baking soda, and liquid soap on hand, use vinegar diluted with water.)
Caution: Do NOT store this mixture or make it ahead of time, as the mixture could explode if left in a bottle.
Step 3: Clean and rinse
Rub the mixture through their fur, but don't leave it on too long (peroxide can bleach fur). Rinse them thoroughly.
Step 4: Shampoo
Next, wash your dog with pet shampoo and rinse thoroughly. By now, they should be de-skunked and smelling sweet. Thoroughly towel-dry your dog, and be sure to place them in a warm, sunny room for the next couple of hours so that they don't get chilled.
Owner cleanup
If your dog rubbed some of the stink onto you, you can rid your clothes of the smell by using regular laundry detergent mixed with a half-cup of baking soda.

(7,715 posts)Our pet store has a bathing area for dogs and I did that, as well as doused pupper with Nature's Remedy. Worked well.
You can also do this with your puppy at home too.
Might be harder to do now.

(4,896 posts)once we could get him to stop puking I went to the store and bought about every can of tomato juice they had. We washed to dog in the tub (what a mess the bathroom was), but 90 to 95% of the smell was taken care of. Still took about a week for the remant smell to disipate but it does work.

(8,261 posts)Unfortunately, with two dogs, we have some experience with this. We have found that Natures miracle skunk works well. We have tried tomato juice, apple cider vinegar all sorts of stuff, but have had the best results with Natures Miracle. They have a product that is specifically for skunk spray. They also have a product for dog/cat urine. Make sure you get th e skunk one.

(86,038 posts)products in the past but we're out in the sticks and not going on a three hour round trip to get some, that's how ling it takes to get to a pet store that would carry it. There was a great recipe posted above and it worked great, didn't cost much at all since we had everything here to make it.
We don't usually have a problem with them but one built a nest in one of the irrigation culverts earlier this spring, was evicted a couple weeks ago and is still hanging around.

(51,430 posts)Tomato juice works, vinegar, etc. My dog was skunked at 3 AM and I went to the store right away. The next day when I was at work (my last day too) and opened my purse and the smell came out and everyone smelled it. It smelled like burnt pink erasers and garlic...yuk!
The smell will continue to come back for a long time, when ever the dog gets damp/wet.
