Im on back porch having coffee and I hear woof woof. So I get up and let mr golden boy out to use the yard. And he pauses sniffs the air listens , and then looks at me come on man you gotta cover me while I go to the bathroom its dark out. So we travel the yard together as he sniffed out the perfect spot, and then when he is done he runs back to the patio door. I let him in and he goes back to bed with my wife.

(205,731 posts)I always go out with my dog, we have wildlife in these parts - including skunks! And last week a couple of barking Dobermans came tearing around the house so I had to get my dog inside fast!

(205,731 posts)They're scared of the dog, so they keep their distance. My previous dog was once sprayed by a skunk, we don't want to go through that again.

(12,865 posts)Got sprayed three times now if he smells skunk he runs towards the house.

(205,731 posts)But he sure learned a tough lesson! What did you use to clean him up? I was a kid and my mother had us go to the store for tomato juice, that was considered the remedy back then. That poor pup spent the night in the bathroom and even after a professional bath she still smelled skunky for awhile if she got the least bit damp.
We use peroxide baking soda then this skunk wash shampoo sad thing is it took him 8 years to learn cats with stripes bad. Oh well he was free

(205,731 posts)And my dogs didn't cost me, either. My guys came from rescue - my Jack was a "pet shop" rescue, he had a health issue, a hernia that was repaired when he was neutered, he's fine. I only had to pay his vet bills - and that's gone on for 12 years. And I know you wouldn't trade your Boog for anything, feel the same way about my Jack.

(53,410 posts)One is for getting rid of skunk smell and it really is miracle spray. You can use it on everything the dog touches, like your clothes when the dog bumps you as it runs past you to get away from the skunk. To walls, rugs, etc. it really works!

(205,731 posts)And we do have a PetCo around here. This happened in the '80s to the cocker spaniel I grew up with - she always slept with me except for that night and even the professional bath she had the next day didn't totally get rid of the smell. And I had to take a bath too, you're right. Good to know!

(53,410 posts)If there is still some smell that lingers it just means you missed a spot.

(205,731 posts)Skunks don't tend to hop off when they're startled by the dog like the bunnies too. I remember once driving around after I got home from work because there was a skunk sitting right in front of the house like he was waiting for me...

(160,590 posts)Actually, it was an act of kindness, instead of sitting there nearly on top of said skunk and blasting your horn at it, scaring it senseless.

(205,731 posts)That's what we mainly see in my neck-of-the-woods. I had skunks on my mind because I sat and waited for one to waddle across the road just the other night - too bad for the vehicle behind me. And scaring skunks is not a wise idea, either.

(3,616 posts)I leave at 4 am, and it is dark out, and I have to let my boy out in the yard. You would think having been skunked already 3 times, he wouldn't be a fool go after them. I have to get the flashlight out and make sure no skunks are there before I let him out.
Dealing with a skunked dog at 4 am is no fun.

(11,802 posts)The mighty Zeppelin has a serious case of Napoleon complex. The bigger the dog, the more aggressive he gets. I've nearly gotten mauled protecting him from pit bulls he's gone after. Little prick. But the cats beat him up all the time and he just takes it, unless they get to close to his food dish.
