Related: About this forumMy backyard smells like a latrine. Help!
I live in a townhome & my 60 lb baby (Australian Cattle Dog/Border Collie mix) has this one area to go potty.
It's about 10 ft x 6 ft.
Grass, and dirt.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of the stench? I live in Az and it's getting up to 100* & the hotter it gets, the more it stinks.
I was using this product from Petco, their brand, that you attach to the hose and spray the area. Didn't help but I like that I can spray the area.
Anyone have any recommendations? Of course I want it to be safe for her. Looking for a powder or something I can attach to the hose.
TIA

(28,130 posts)You could also try baking soda but garden lime is much better and both are very safe.

(612 posts)While this usually seems to be marketed for horse stalls, I can attest that this stuff works well both for cat boxes and outdoor doggie areas.
We have four male indoor-only cats, two Yellow Labs and one Great Dane... so...
The price on Amazon has gone up drastically since I bought a bag in January or February, but if you have a TrueValue hardware store near you, $17.99 is a great price with free to store shipping if they don't have it locally:

Safer than lime, especially if your fur-child will continue using the same area!

(28,130 posts)That's a good find also, just bear in mind that's a 25 lb. bag vs the 40 lb. bag at TrueValue.
The size of the 40 lb. bag is similar to say the size of a 25 lb. bag of dog food. It's just quite heavy for the volume. I also wanted to mention that there are two types available, a granular and a powder. You definitely want the granular.
I don't own stock in the company, either, but it's so very difficult to keep the various odors our babies produce at bay - so a great product just has to be promoted!!
Hope this helps!

(22,196 posts)Its wonderful stuff. (DE for short) Kind of like lime in getting rid of smells, but also--Google it, "talc-like powder that is the fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton. When sprinkled on a bug that has an exoskeleton (such as bed bugs, ants or fleas) it compromises their waxy coating so that their innards turn into teeny tiny bug jerky. But it doesn't hurt mammals. We can eat it. We do eat it! It's in lots of grain based foods because lots of grains are stored with diatomaceous earth to keep the bugs from eating the grain!"
We get it at the local farm co-op for around $20 for 40 lbs. Lasts forever.
