Related: About this forumL-lysine and feline herpes
I have heard that this supplement helps symptoms for a cat who has a chronic affliction of feline herpes with the stuffy nose and watery eyes. I have a cat like this who is 13.
I have tried a few brands of the l-lysine powder and it didn't seem to help. Then a volunteer at the shelter said he tried the 100% pure capsules, available at Amazon, and has good results. Another volunteer also tried it and her cat was improved after 5 days. So I am trying it and will let you know if it makes a difference.
This kitty has better and worse days. On the worse days her eyes run. And she frequently sneezes. We find "cat-sneeze" on our windows and walls, and she sometimes sneezes on me during the night! (I'm used to it by now!)
It seems worse during the winter months when the windows are closed, so it isn't allergy (unless allergy to something in the house). I'm assuming it is herpes virus and some cats just don't get over it.
Will update if it does any good!

(9,850 posts)Lysine and Vit. C are almost as good as antibiotics/antivirals. I have not tried anything except the lysine granules and they might have helped my Dolly, who arrived here 4 years ago with very goopy eyes. She still has slightly weepy eyes from time to time and a bit of sneeziness, but for the most part, she is a very healthy, happy cat.

(17,276 posts)I mean, how many mg per a 9 lb cat? Getting it into her might be a challenge if it is a tablet!

(20,882 posts)Good luck fooling the likes of an 18 year old very wise cat! She knew something was amiss and wouldn't eat it with the l-lysine put in her food. Oh well ...

The l-lysine did not help.
The only thing that did help was bathing her eyes with warm water via ORGANIC cotton balls a few times a day.
She had a bad case of this that worsened as she aged. She used to come up to you and *blink* *blink* *blink* her eyes at you to let you know she wanted her eyes washed.
She was a sweet kitty and lived to be 18 years old. She had the feline herpes for probably the last five years of her life.
Best of luck finding something to help with the awful problem!
Edited to add the word "organic" in front of cotton balls. Seemed like a good idea being the eyes were involved.

(15,224 posts)Most importantly, I've never seen a quick improvement. Some cats have seemed to improve with it, and I've never been sure if it was actually the L-Lysine, or rather that the virus simply ran its course.
I do use a lot of a supplement called "Moducare" for immune balance in some of my older or inform kitties.
