They are inducing my daughter in law and none of this makes sense

She is 39 weeks and they are inducing because the baby was on the small side and felt he would grow faster outside the womb?????? WTF

This was a week ago, so this is a planned induction.

I asked her if she had any blood pressure issues or other issues, she said no.

Now she's at the hospital and they put something into her cervix because it is not effaced. Tomorrow they will start Pitocin.

My cervix was already doing stuff at 38 weeks and all of my kids were born a week late.

My hunch is my DIL is not 39 weeks and that is why her baby is on the small side.

I understand your stress.
But it's likely going to be ok.
Doctors do a really good job with ultrasounds today, and they can very reliably estimate the baby's gestational age. Even if they get it off by a week or so (unlikely), that still puts her at 38 weeks, which is full term. 38-41 weeks is totally normal for delivery.

where is she?

Thanks for the ultrasound info. I forgot I only had one at like 20 weeks.

I feel bad that this labor is going to suck for her....I hope it doesn't......

The 20 wk ultrasounds these days are amazing. And they do careful measurements of all the fetal bones and estimate the baby's age - usually to within a day or two.

Good luck to her!

My wife was induced at 34 weeks because her water broke. Delivery was pretty normal. Hardest part was we didn't finish the birthing classes and she didn't know how to breathe. Nurse was bitchy about it so the doctor threw her out of the room, and I got a crash course in obstetrical nursing.

But wow, I'm with you, I think these sorts of interventions are playing with fire!

Hoping it all goes well and that the worry is for naught!

The baby wasn't growing enough inside her. He was worryingly small for months. My co-worker's mother had had the same problem with her. They were going to take him out in December (he had an early January due date). And then all of a sudden, at almost the last second, he started growing.

eta: I forgot to say, best wishes for the mother and baby! I'll be sending out good thoughts.

and had an extra 5 or so ounces on him. In our case, mom had a wonky placenta that wasn't keeping us feed right, which is why they took him as early as they safely could, I guess.

Best wishes to your DIL and the rest of you. Very exciting that baby will be here soon!

But with all the ultrasounds these days, you would think they would know.
And if they can spot a problem with the placenta, they do a C-Section.

But you never know there could be something going on the with placenta that is not showing up on the ultrasound.

No Pitocin until tonight, so I guess that's a good thing.

I assume they can't even break her water yet.

She never went into labor.

I told my son what I thought, then he and his wife got really upset and confronted the doctor. The doctor admitted she thought something was "wrong" with the placenta. With that, they both insisted on a C-Section.
