Creme-filled doughnuts- how long can they be left at room-temperature, without spoiling?

They are sold at room temperature, and one has no idea how long they've been in the unrefrigerated case.
I purchase doughnuts at 1/2 price at the local Kroger's in a box of 12 mixed type - some crème-filled, some not.
The crème-filling is of the pudding-type color and consistency.

Problem - they box up the individual donuts for 1/2 price sale at 6p.m. No Vested Interest May 2018 #7
Excellent question, but mine don't last that long, they get eaten immediately! n/t RKP5637 May 2018 #4

I have to stay away from bakeries just for that reason. It's either that or I go to the department store for Big Boy pants.

but bacteria starts multiplying almost immediately in your "petri dish" donuts.

I'd eat them that day... same day you bought them... and maybe throw out the ones that lasted until 5pm.

One would think Kroger would throw them out themselves if the donuts were unsafe by late in the day.
A box of 12 is $3.50 after 6p.m.
More than I need or can use, but I'm a sucker for a bargain.

They take their unsold bagels and give(?) them to someone who feeds them to chickens.

refrigerate 41 degrees or less.

However since they where sold unrefrigerated, I trust that Kroger's t donuts have too much sugar, and are too dry, to support bacterial growth. So are most likely still safe.

chemicals in the preservatives of that 'cream' filling it would probably have a half life of a month ... donut will be stale long before that ...

I worked at a Dunkin Donuts as a kid. The pudding-type yellow cream for the Bavarian and Boston Cream donuts came in 5-galllon buckets and was *never refrigerated.* Enough chemicals in that stuff to last for many months. Still yummy.

I should ask someone in Kroger's bakery section for an explanation next time I'm through there.
