Savory Roaster Turkey

My wife informed me Friday that I'd be cooking a turkey on Sunday. Her mother won a frozen 13 lb. turkey at the assisted living place, but has no oven in her apartment. So my wife brought it home and said it would be dinner on Sunday. Frozen solid. Into the fridge it went, but was still partly frozen this morning when I checked.

So, I went downstairs and grabbed my old 1930s Savory Roaster. It's a double-walled enameled steel roasting pan with a very tall lid, about 18" long. I unwrapped the turkey, dug the giblets out of it with a big spoon and dropped it in the roaster and put it in the ove at 10 AM at 350 degrees. Then, I went away and ignored it until 2 P.M. Pulled this miracle roaster out of the oven and removed the lid. Inside was a perfectly browned, crispy-skinned turkey. The meat thermometer said 160 degrees. I was supposed to slice the thing up. The breasts came off the bone with a fork, and the thigh meat just fell off. Tasted great, and the skin was yummy.

Look up Savory Roaster. They're about $30 on ebay. Amazing stuff. You can't make a mistake with this roasting pan.

all the old country wives had one of those as soon as electricity came to the boonies!

My Grandmother wore hers out and I covet my neighbor's. You can get new ones again but somehow I just don't trust them.
