Crabapples - are they still a thing?

While doing my Thanksgiving shopping, I decided to see if the store had any spiced crabapples. Nope. Then it occurred to me that I haven't seen them in decades. Are they still being grown anywhere? I'll settled for canned ones - but not jelly: I want actual crabapples!

I never did like them very much. The taste of cloves was just too strong.

I'm in the San Francisco area - I'd have to buy a lot of crabapples to make the trip worth while!

I have some very small apples, which I'm going to try to pickle like crabapples and see how it goes.

The apples we buy come from older places in the area where the old trees are still producing. There may be some in your area. Do you have something like a farmers' bulletin where people post their want/sale items? You might find them there.

grew on trees near where we lived when I was a kid. They were small and too sour to eat, but my Irish grandmother could make the most amazing apple pie from them.
