I'm baking a birthday cake tomorrow

Tomorrow I bake a birthday cake for a twelve-year-old girl, so I’m having fun browsing cake recipes. I’m pretty good at making cakes, but I’m not at all talented in the decorating department. Does anyone have an idea for an easy way to decorate a birthday cake? I have half a mind to leave it plain and just plunk candles on top.

At Target I found a gold glitter Happy Birthday to just stick in the top of the cake.

Chocolate frosting. Strawberry jam and frosting between the layers.

Chocolate covered strawberries to decorate the top. My son asked for that cake when he was about 12. Boy loves cake.

After browsing a whole bunch of recipes, I’m going with the tried and true—Nigella’s old fashioned chocolate cake.

I’ve made it before. It’s stupid easy and makes a very decent cake.

Why not?

It will seem a little bit more "grown-up," something every 12 year-old wants to be.

Shaved chocolate might be a good choice. Most everyone likes chocolate.

on edit: BOTH! a ring of strawberries or raspberries with a pile of chocolate shavings inside the ring of fruit. Then the candles in a ring around the fruit.

my firsborn was gifted with a dozen small silver animal bday cake candleholders so made me think maybe a small flower for each candle. voilets and some others are edible too.
