Tomorrow I bake a birthday cake for a twelve-year-old girl, so Im having fun browsing cake recipes. Im pretty good at making cakes, but Im not at all talented in the decorating department. Does anyone have an idea for an easy way to decorate a birthday cake? I have half a mind to leave it plain and just plunk candles on top.

Chocolate covered strawberries to decorate the top. My son asked for that cake when he was about 12. Boy loves cake.

It will seem a little bit more "grown-up," something every 12 year-old wants to be.
Shaved chocolate might be a good choice. Most everyone likes chocolate.
on edit: BOTH! a ring of strawberries or raspberries with a pile of chocolate shavings inside the ring of fruit. Then the candles in a ring around the fruit.
