Anyone who's had DNA testing done...

Have you ever had, or considered having, a second test done by a different company?

I guess for purposes of more definite confirmation...


As I posted in a thread below, I recently had an Ancestry.com test done and got some surprising results.

What I've been thinking of for the past couple of days is maybe now doing one from another place. Like 23andMe.

My only problem with doing that is thinking, well, what if the results don't match the Ancestry.com results... I'd like to clear up any lingering mysteries, but I don't want to make even more with a conflicting result.

Has anyone ever done multiple genealogical DNA tests and gotten consistent results?

1. I did DNA testing with Genebase several years ago

along with several members of the family.

It'a been interesting, but I don't see the need to go to another company if the system of reporting is useful to you.

I'm just sort of curious.

Like with one part, about 13% that's supposedly "trace" ancestry. I'm just wondering if another company would be able to hone in better on that.

Although I also did get to wondering if these places all send their samples to the same lab, which wouldn't be much help either.


another thing I found out, which only adds more mystery to the whole thing...

I discovered that, just like multiple kids in a family can inherit genes for different things, like blue eyes or brown eyes (everyone in my nuclear family had/has dark hair and eyes except for me), the same thing can happen for ethnic DNA as well. That is, one child could get DNA matchup for, say, Scandinavia while another kid...same parents...might get none. Or so little it might not even count.

I'll try to find where I read that and post it.

And so that's why I'm wondering about different results from different places. Or different results for siblings, even.

Yes, please do try and find that, because appearances aside e.g. one child light, one dark , I thought the actual DNA matchup would be the same.

So I guess I may have ended up answering my own question...instead of doing a second test on myself, I should probably have my youngest full-blooded sister do a test. If there's any Native American DNA, it would likely be in her, as she most closely matches the physical profile. Very thick, very straight dark hair and eyes, which are sort of almond shaped. My middle sister's hair is quite coarse and kinky, and mine is babyfine, but almost ridiculously reactive to humidity, going from mildly wavy to a curly mess when it's damp out.

Also, I'm not as dark as the rest of the family.

6. I've tested with Ancestry as well as 23and Me.

I also uploaded our results to ftDNA.

All tests show basically the same ethnicity with minor differences. For instance, my dad tests about 12% Jewish DNA with 23andMe, while predictably me and my sister have 5%.
My Dad shows 13% Jewish DNA with Ancestry, but I show 2%.

Our Native DNA is not shown with Ancestry, but it shows with 23andMe.

23andMe will give you your Haplogroups if someone is interested. They also have graphs that show where your DNA match with your DNA cousins.

9. I was reading over the terms and had a question.

I've never subscribed to Ancestry and got to the unsubscribe part in the terms. Does that mean that taking the Ancestry DNA test automatically kicks one into the subscriber mode and that they keep charging you until you formally opt out? I seem to remember hearing that was an issue but I thought the DNA test was a thing apart. Can you shed some light on this?

in the past, but am not currently. Just every few years I'll activate my membership to see what new things I can discover.

13. Skip Gates (of Finding Your Roots and the Obama Beer Summit) says that there are many kinds of

tests to run--they will give differing results, depending on if you are focusing on the father's line or the mother's line. It's not the company, it is what the test emphasizes and how many markers they look for. Also, sometimes it is best to have a male relative take the test because that will reveal more information.

19. Part of the "Trace" data is due to people migrating to other areas.

Every single ancestor of mine moved to the US from Norway and Sweden. No other countries, yet my results showed "trace" amounts from Ireland, Great Britain, France and Finland/NW Russia. Undoubtedly, in the past, beyond records, there was some migration to/from Norway and Sweden. A Viking (my ancestors that I know of were all farmers) could have left a little something behind on a raid on the British Isles, leaving "Scandinavian" genes in those areas. So now, the local mix of genes includes "Scandinavian" genes and shows up as trace ancestry from that area. Finns/NW Russians undoubtedly repopulated the Scandinavian peninsula after the last Ice Age.
Any area of the world is going to have some drift from other areas, there are no "pure blooded" populations. In my opinion "trace" DNA results are most likely evidence of ancient migrations and not a "surprize" parenting in the recent past. To be sure those happen, but it is far more likely that "trace" DNA results are from ancient population drift.

22. On further research, my father's grandmother was substantially Finnish.

My test said 9% Finland/NW Russia, my father did the test and came up 18% Finland/NW Russia. Pushing back further on his side, I have started hitting Finnish names.

The guy who sits next to me at work starting doing his tree after hearing about my work and I offered to help, since I have a World Explorer subscription to Ancestry.com. I just tonight found that his mother's family goes into Stjordahl, Norway, whre my dad's mother's family is from. I'm starting to hit family trees that I recognize, there's a chance that the guy I sit next at work is my distant cousin...

20. I just had the "Big Y" done on FTDNA

after having Ancestry. Found out my haplogroup is mainly Jewish origins. My father was full blooded Sicilian.

21. Just got my results back

from Ancestry but going to retest with 23andMe because my sister used 23andMe and seemed to get a more thorough/detailed analysis. We basically had the same info but my sister's showed more detailed info as to what countries and areas some of the various ethnicities came from and some that didn't even show up on mine with Ancestry. I don't if that's because I didn't inherit some of that particular DNA and my sister did, or the percentage was so low it didn't show up on their test but would on a 23andMe test. 23andMe also checks for Neanderthal DNA too, or so I've heard. I also bought 23andMe tests for my mom and brother so I can compare my mom's with ours so we can discern which of some ethnicities came from Mom and which from Dad, as there were some definite surprises, ethnicity-wise!

30. Yes, 23andme does but if you've done the DNA test at Ancestry...

You can download the raw data and upload it to some other sites that match for a very low cost or free. You can Upload it to My Heritage, GED match and Family Tree just to name a few. Family Tree is to get matches will cost $20.

I was adopted in 1961 and using Ancestry, 23 and me, Heritage, Family Tree and others, as well as doing some detective work and following hints that Ancestry gives, I have had it as close as a first cousin once removed on both sides and using some detective work I am now a 95 percent sure that I found both of my birth parents. Sadly both of them are deceased.

I'd also suggest doing a DNA test at one other possibly 2 other testing companies. If you are interested google Genes For Good. Michigan University is doing a huge genetic study and the raw data that you get from the sample you give them is yours to download once processed and use as you want to. The negative with them is you do have to answer a bunch of questions before you get the kit and they're taking a very long time to process it. I rather liked it I might be contributing to finding a cause or possibly a cure for things like multiple sclerosis which I have.

Also be patient. Sometimes it takes time, especially if the person who is adopted is older. I've found that the list of matches grows over time and as more people take the tests.

Because they keep updating their data with the more information they get from participants. The more participants they get, the more accurate they can be. It's actually part of a study, not a gimmick so the 23andMe people can get rich.

31. Just got the results

Seems the man that I had pegged to be my grandfather was the right person.

My mother was adopted in 1925 and we never knew who she was. Then came geneaology!

The DNA showed my #1 match to be the nephew of Mother's father.

Seems this family she was from had a great deal of political clout in the State of Texas where they were in charge of things so to speak.

I contacted this #1 hit and the guy was in major denial and said that ancestry.com is "a big rip-off". Never heard from him again. Thanks for nothing Mr. Cousin ...

Its not the first time I've been turned away in life and I'm sure it won't be the last time either.

However, it is good to know that all of the work I've been doing for 20 years has now been validated so to speak! Time to move on in life dare I suggest as Mission Accomplished so to speak!

my results. Going to be a long two months!

Will definitely look into having my data uploaded elsewhere. Will try to talk little bro into getting tested, but doubt he will do it.
