I have decided to shed my extra weight and got on keto.

Last edited Sat Apr 20, 2024, 01:29 PM - Edit history (1)

I was 213 lbs for 5'6". Need to be at 165lbs (male 54yr old).

So far, after a month I am 13.5lbs down. I have no feeling of hunger whatsoever or tiredness. Apparently, I learned that it is one of the side effects of ketosis, your appetite declines, and you don't feel hungry. I have fallen into a routine now thanks to a few things I have found helpful.

First, a good macro tracking app. I am using carb manager and it's really good. You can track all your macros, even scan foods that are likely in the database, use it to track your weight too.

Second, I purchased a device to measure my level of ketosis, it's called ketoscan and analyses your breath. No need to prick your finger for blood like other devices. Its interesting to see how the ketosis levels evolve using that device.

Third, after a while I started to learn what kind of foods I should stock and eat. For example, in the morning its fried eggs and 2 sausage patties or an avocado and salmon+cream cheese.

I also found that most restaurants will happily accommodate you. At Applebee for example, I order a classic burger with no bun along with cheesy broccoli.

I have another 35 lbs to go. I expect my weight loss might slow down now after the initial big losses. However, I can't wait to see my doctor for the yearly physical and have him be amazed. I was edging into the pre-diabetic status (high A1C) and definitely do not want to end up diabetic.

I lost almost 60 lbs. on a keto diet during the pandemic. A bit of it has started to creep back lately because I've gotten sloppy about it, so I need to crack down on myself again, but it won't be painful because I know it works. Stay with it.

Diets can be difficult sometimes.

I did the Atkins low carb thing a few decades back. I would like for someone to explain the difference between Atkins and Keto.

Thanks, and again, Congrats!

On Atkins, you start with the goal of getting into ketosis. You'll slowly add healthy carbs back into your diet, and you eventually reach a point where you're at your ideal weight and don't gain or lose.
I track my daily food and macros (protein, carbs, fats, etc) on the Atkins website (it's free) and it does help me stay on track.
I found that for me, eating lots of dairy made me gain back, so I limit my cheeses and mix cream with coconut milk for my coffee now.
And the appetite control aspect is magical!

I get confused by the good carb, bad carb issue. On Atkins in the beginning all carbs are bad. My problem was when I started adding carbs back the pasta, rice, potato switch got turned back on and voila, gained the weight back.

If I may ask. Did you read any particular books or websites to get started? Best wishes to you!

If you haven't seen a nutritionist, I have to urge that you figure out a way to get your fiber to 22 g a day or so to grab excess saturated fat beyond what your liver can deal with out of your bloodstream, to protect you from a heart attack or a stroke. It's easy. Psyllium husk is unobjectionable.

Congrats! Onward!

The app calculates the optimal macros for any diet including keto. You enter your weight, height, goal etc. It calculates the profile. In my case I have 1400 cal a day with 18 g carbs, 88 of proteins and 109 of fat.

That app also has recipes, thousands of food in the database. You can scan food packages bar codes and it tells you the macros.

It's pretty simple. You just fit within that daily allowance and look up food or recipes that works.
Low carb means no bread, milk, pasta, etc.. just load up on proteins and fat.

After all, I was born in France. French people love bread. At least I still get to eat cheese.

The hardest is to get started. After a few days, your body adapts, you are no longer hungry or tired and its smooth sailing.
