Just finished watching THE PACIFIC on Netflix...EXCELLENT!!!

I had rented this series years ago via Google Play and was riveted by its attention to detail, the stories about Marines such as John Basilone, Eugene Sledge, Robert Leckie, Merriell "Snafu" Shelton, and others who fought in the slaughter house like settings of Iwo Jima, Guadacanal, Peleliu, and Okinawa during WWII. Watching it again was even more hard hitting and filled in what I missed.

The stellar cast that was assembled to portray these Marines tear at your heart as to their bravery under such extreme circumstances. Joe Mazzello(Sledge), James Badge Dale(Leckie), Jon Seda(Basilone), Rami Malek(Snafu), and many more, round out this outstanding cast. The opening credits and soundtrack music sets the mood of things to come. This riveting series demonstrates the human toll war takes.

I just ordered Eugene Sledge's memoir..WITH THE OLD BREED: AT PELEIU AND OKINAWA. From which the material from the book was sourced for the series. I also intend to watch Ken Burns' documentary series THE WAR.

I highly recommend this series. *****/5

Both it and "With the Old Breed" do an incredible job of capturing the emotional impact the war had on both men.

Their stories are indeed riveting, as well as heartbreaking when they were in the service.

My Winter reading schedule will be busy as I am reading a biographical book on The Tudors. Read 2 about The Medicis as well.

Riveting and heartbreaking definitely encapsulates these stories. The other thing that struck me in both books, as well as in the series, was the fact these men were fighting in areas most of them, and most Americans, had never heard of prior to the war, in contrast to the European theater. When you add in the unique brutality they faced on a daily basis, it's easy to see how these stories were not as well known prior to "The Pacific".
