Movie Copperhead

I watched this last night on Amazon Prime. Pretty good historical movie. It was particularly interesting to me as my Civil War ancestor came from upstate NY, near Buffalo, but didn't muster in until 1864, I think he was around 23-24 then. Wondering if he was initially a "Copperhead".

Well, as long as he ended up on the right side, I'd say that's what matters! 😁 ShazzieB Dec 2022 #3

I'm reading a biography of Lincoln* right now, and it mentions the Copperheads, who I had never heard of before. They are described as follows:

The term was coined to denote the antiwar Democrats, a virulently anti-Lincoln political force in the Northern and border states. Sometimes called Peace Democrats, they were persistent critics of the president, attacking his wartime measures and lobbying for a negotiated settlement to the war.

I wasn't aware of the movie before, but now I'm going to have to watch it!

I hope your ancestor was not a Copperhead, but if he was, I think I kind of know the feeling. Some of my ancestors were on the Confederate side, which does not please me one bit!

If he was a Copperhead, he had a change of heart and did fight for the Union. Lucky for me that he joined the war effort so late, otherwise I might not be here. Now that I'm thinking about it, he moved from NY to WS, but I'm not sure when exactly. as he joined a regiment in WS. Will have to do some further research.

I'd never heard of the term "Copperhead" before either, but my husband had when I told him about the movie this morning. If you think of it, let me know how you like it later on.

I watched the trailer for "Copperhead" tonight, and I definitely plan to watch it soon, while I'm still reading this book and kind of immersed in the Civil War era. I'll let you know what I think.
