Yes, the dreaded procedure - colonoscopy. The easiest cancer to be prevented, as long as people undergo the procedure.
And for most, it is the preparation that holds them back.
So, as often happens with our FDA, a preparation that existed in Europe for many years finally got the approval of the FDA last July.
It is Sodium Picosulfate that in Europe is used under the brand name PicoLax. Here it is called PREPOPIK

It involves two packets of powder dissolved in 5 oz of water taken 5-6 hours apart. In between five 8-oz glass of liquid about once an hour and then 3 glasses of liquid.
Mine tested like a concentrated effervescent lemonade and I immediately took the first glass of water.
So if you, or a loved one is over 50, go get a colonoscopy.
Several years ago, a co-worker in his mid 60s was told by hid doctor to get a colonoscopy. He ignored it. A year later he was diagnosed with liver cancer to where the colon one migrated, and was dead four months later.

(19,827 posts)No matter what prep your insurance pays for, DO IT. I had one a couple weeks ago, most was harmless except for 2 growths . Might have turned into cancer is still to close for comfort. There is no excuse for someone to get this disease. Ive had 3 now and need one every 5 years, is it worth it so save your life?
JUST DO IT.

(25,183 posts)when I got my esophagus examined twice within the last six years. The anesthesiologist confirmed for me that it was the stuff that Michael Jackson died from.
No wonder he got addicted to that. It was way better than the best Imperial India Pale Ale I've ever had, and zero hangover. I do recall telling the anesthesiologist that it was better than IIPA, and I remember hearing him chuckle just before I went nighty-night.
With modern anesthetics, the prep really is the worst part of the whole thing. Hopefully, the advances of the OP will make it easier. I do remember feeling that my ass was an upside-down volcano in preparation for this.

We've come a long way, haven't we?!

(47,551 posts)but needs to be done once a year. And, once you do find you may need an emergency colonoscopy.
I think that after 50 most insurance plans do pay.
On the other hand, I think that in other countries it is recommended to have it every five years while here it is 10. No, I don't think it drives health care costs.

(19,278 posts)She filled an order for a laxative prep, and the customer mixed it up and drank in right there in the store! My wife asked if she was going back home immediately, to which the woman replied that, no, she had a lot of shopping to do for the rest of the day. My wife explained to her in the politest way possible that she needed to get her ass back home, grab a good book or her laptop, and kiss all her other plans for the day goodbye, because she wouldn't want to venture more than 20 ft from the toilet. Apparently that stuff can be brutal!
