Dave Chappelle show cancelled over transgender jokes controversy

21 July 2022

Comedian Dave Chappelle has had a live show cancelled at the last minute due to controversy over some of his jokes.

The First Avenue venue in Minnesota apologised for booking him and said the show would move to another theatre.

Chappelle has received both huge support and intense criticism for his jokes about transgender people in recent stand-up routines.

First Avenue said it must hold itself "to the highest standards". Chappelle has not yet commented.

Chappelle's live shows and TV specials, and the platforms hosting them, regularly attract criticism due to comments he's made in previous routines which some viewers find offensive.

But I know darned well that I don't want to. Every time his name comes up, all I hear is "Eww, transphobia!" That is literally all I associate with him, and I'm sick of hearing about his transphobic ass.

I know I'm in a minority, but I can't possibly be the only one. And I have to say I think it's pretty pathetic when being a raging transphobe is as much a part of somebody's claim to fame as it seems to be with him. I hope this venue kicking him out is the start of a trend. It's high time he started paying a price for his behavior.

I've never found his stand-up particularly funny, and especially now as he's leaning into his transphobia.

I won't watch him anymore. Not even his old stuff. Because I'm with you. Anytime I see or hear his name anymore, I see red and think about his blatant transphobia and hate.

I no longer see a comedian. I see a raging bigot. I don't know if that's the reputation and legacy he wanted... But it sure is the one he's earned.

The First Amendment gives him the right to free speech. It does not guarantee him the right to put on comedy shows and get paid for them.

Words and actions have consequences. It's about time that bigots and conservatives (and yes, he is both) get shown that.

The only thing I don't like about this article is it calls his bigoted shit "jokes". No. They're not jokes. The only people finding his transphobic shit "funny" are the same people who think Fucker Carlson is "funny".

Real sorry, Chappelle.... NOT.
