The Conspiracy Theory At the Center of the Far Right's Violence Against LGBTQ+ People

On Saturday, police arrested 31 members of the white nationalist organization, Patriot Front, for allegedly plotting an attack on a Pride festival event in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. In the aftermath of the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, the group has become a muscular presence at anti-government and anti-abortion events. Its rise to prominence is fueled by its fascist aesthetic and the aggressive project announced on its online platform – to “reclaim America” for members of the “European race.”

The thwarted attack on a Pride festival and the subsequent mass arrest of Patriot Front members calls attention to a broader feature of the contemporary far right – its widespread hostility toward LGBTQ+ communities. In 2020, for instance, the memorial to the homophobic mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida was defaced by Patriot Front stickers.

This hostility is not new nor is it accidental. Instead, it reflects the far right’s deepest anxieties over an increasingly diverse nation, rooted in lurid fears over race and reproduction.

At the center of the far right’s homophobia and transphobia lies the same conspiracy theory that led to the killing of 10 Black shoppers at a grocery store in Buffalo, NY in May. These seemingly disparate episodes of violence are connected by a single narrative of white population panic: the Great Replacement conspiracy theory.

That's why the white supremacists were chanting, "Jews will not replace us!" as they marched in Charlottesville. (Jews being one of the many groups they hate and accuse of trying to replace them. )

Personally, I'd love to see all white supremacists replaced by Jews, LGBTQ people and brown and black folks. It would be a big improvement, afaic. Those dickheads wouldn't be missed at all, except maybe by their own mamas.

Recent articles suggest it started back in the 60's, but as someone who has researched Jewish history and the history of anti-Semitism, let me say, their suggestion is wrong. While it may have not had the fancy name, this conspiracy theory has been around since at least the Middle Ages in Europe. One thing some get wrong about the "Jews will not replace us" chant is they think the snowflakes are whining about Jews replacing them with other Jews, that is not what they are whining about; they believe the Jews are responsible for Civil Rights for minorities, and control immigration so they, the Jews, can replace the white people with "lesser people" they (the Jews) can more easily control. This "endgame" of the Jews is used by white nationalists to stoke fear and hate against Jews by claiming they (white nationalists and racial/ethnic minorities) have the same enemy, the Jews.

We've gone from bigoted bills and bigoted comments, to hateful rants, to now open threats and harassment... And it's only mid-June. There's four more months between now and the midterms for things to get worse. More hatred fueled by more bigoted bills. More candidates running on a platform of rounding up and executing LGBTQ's. More "groomers" lies - or even a worse label being thrown around.

And armed to the teeth and threatening us are people who've killed before, and are itching to kill again. The same "fine patriots" who gave us Charlottesville and January 6 now want to go on a killing spree that leaves The Pulse in the dust.

The nation in general and LGBTQ's specifically are in the cross-hairs and being held hostage by people who think they are this nation, they speak for this nation, and they have the sole discretion to decide who can live and who can't. People with more guns than brain cells.

We are in truly horrifying and frightening times. Sick times. And who is to thank? The former "Republican party" (now the Republican terrorist cult), reich-wing hate media, a failed businessman and reality TV buffoon who occupied the White House, and his master Vlad the Impaler Putin.

I hope to hell the FBI, DOJ, DHS and all other relevant agencies are watching like hawks and ready to step in before we have blood in the streets... again.
