2019 Best of Gay San Diego winners

Reader's choice awards

San Diego’s businesses, nonprofits, eateries and people are as diverse as the colors that the rainbow flag represents. This year’s Best of Gay San Diego is a perfect expression of how these people and places affect our lives on an everyday basis.

I strongly dislike Gay-SD.com and its publisher (partner to "Gay Republican" Carl Demio). The paper never discloses the connection to Carl or information one would expect.

In this case an ethical publication would have at minimum said how these businesses were chosen and awarded, as well as explaining if the winners are paying advertising with the company or paying to be on this list.

For example, here is an ethically published "best of" list that discloses how the businesses get on the list: https://www.forbes.com/lists/best-midsize-employers/#3657d410210f

As stated in the article:
“we solicited our readership”.

As in years past, they had previously published the categories,
and readers responded.

No big conspiracy.

“We solicited our readership” in marketing terms could mean many things, that’s why saying the specific method is important. How many readers? We’re businesses that pay advertising included as readers (they read the paper after all)? When were they asked and over what period of time? Seriously that statement is not an ethical way of disclosure.
