Texas governor signs controversial 'Save Chick-fil-A' bill

Washington (CNN) ó Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has signed a controversial measure that supporters say provides religious protections but Democrats and critics argue would allow discrimination against the state's LGBTQ community.

Abbott, a Republican, signed Senate Bill 1978, nicknamed the "Save Chick-fil-A" bill, on Monday, according to the Texas legislature's website, after the legislation cleared the state House and Senate last month. The chain has come under fire for its charitable donations to religious organizations, including the Salvation Army, that oppose same-sex marriage.

The measure prohibits the government from taking "adverse action" against any individuals or businesses based on membership, support or donations to religious groups. Before being sent to the governor, the bill was amended to remove language that would have allowed the Texas attorney general to bring action against any government entity or employee that refused to comply with the bill.

Abbott's office did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment on Wednesday.

The legislation comes after the San Antonio City Council in March approved a new concessions contract for the San Antonio International Airport on the condition that fast food chain Chick-fil-A be excluded. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced an investigation that month into whether the city violated Chick-fil-A's religious liberty with its decision.

2. Two things

Dan Cathy is dead. Also, we won on equal marriage.

I agree with Pete Buttigieg when he said, "I do not approve of their politics, but I kind of approve of their chicken." Aren't we engaging in enough cultural warfare in this country?

4. Yes, there is

And he is one of the people who'd love to tear this country apart over a thousand things. Sadly, there are some progressives who wouldn't mind that a bit.

Look, whether it's Pete, or Joe, or Liz, or whoever on our side takes their rightful place in the White House, they will have to work harder than any President in the history of the nation to unite us again. We need to make that path as smooth as possible, and economic boycotts over old issues are not going to help.

Yes, Chik-fil-A gives money to athletic associations that have ancient homophobic language in their charters. Maybe the best thing to do is to persuade those associations to focus more on athleticism and less on homophobia. Chances are, the young people who are their supported athletes would probably welcome that, and push in that direction as well.

7. Have you ever been to one?

If not, then you don't know what the experience is like. Don't let your hate for a dead man get the best of you, which is what Trump does with McCain.

11. Yes, it's a fast food restaurant

And the vast majority of them have underpaid, overworked staff that can barely get through the day, because their restaurant is selling things mainly off of the value menu. I always get ultra-friendly service from every Chik-fil-A that I've ever been to, and there is a host/hostess working the room to refill soft drinks, or to make anything wrong right.

The only other fast food place I've been to with that level of service is Burgerville, USA in the Portland, Oregon area that I'm originally from. No value menu there, either, but their employees get paid healthcare. And, yes, they knock off work on Sundays, but that guarantees their employees one day off that they can plan around. Back when I lived in the Portland area, there was a supermarket that was run by a Seventh-Day Adventist family, and they always were closed on Saturdays. We just worked around it, and didn't disparage them for their beliefs.
