A federal inmate threatened another for being gay. Then guards moved them into the same cell.
By Eli Rosenberg May 21 at 7:00 AM
The stepmother of inmate Alec Arapahoe called the prison facility where he was incarcerated to relay a message. It was early August 2014.
She said Arapahoe who is gay and Native American told her that other Native American inmates were making threats toward him and that he felt his life would be in danger if he was not placed in protective custody, according to a federal court complaint.
He had specifically named another inmate, William Mexican.

About two months later, Mexican was transferred into Arapahoes cell. The two men were left alone and unsupervised for more than two days, the complaint said.
The brutal beating and multiple rapes that ensued afterward, according to Arapahoe, form the basis of the complaint he filed against 29 prison officials mostly guards from the facility.

Gay prisoner raped and beaten after being forced to share cell with homophobe

The US government has reached a $750,000 settlement with a gay prisoner, who was allegedly beaten and raped after being forced to share with a man who had threatened him.
Alec Arapahoe was awarded the settlement over the incidents at the USP Florence prison in Colorado, which took place while he was incarcerated in 2014 for transporting a stolen car.
Prisoner handed 10 extra years in prison over assault
His cellmate, William Mexican, was sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison after admitting an assault charge over the incident.
Although prison medical records state that said that inmate [Arapahoe] was raped, Mexican was not convicted on a rape charge.
The federal government has now agreed to pay $750,000 under a settlement agreement, Arapahoes lawyer told the Washington Post.
28 guards and officers at the prison were found by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to have committed departmental offences, the newspaper reports.
Officers were found to be inattentive to duty, failing to make rounds of the facility at the time of the assault.
Others were found to have falsified documents that noted rounds had been completed when they had not.
It is unclear what disciplinary action was taken.
A spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons told the newspaper: BOP is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all inmates in our population, our staff, and the public.

Since when, BoP? Tomorrow?
Sounds just like what one would typically hear from corporations rather than government in response to malfeasance, and never with an apology.
I really tire of those lines of bullshit from officials of all stripes.

Little to no disciplinary action is my bet.

After reading the headline, I felt sure this was a story that ended in feel goods - you know, the brute who was threatening him saw what a great human being he was, and had a kumbaya moment, and they became BFFs forever and ever.
This is totally fucked up. Shit.
