A federal appeals court in Philadelphia ruled that city contractors must abide by nondiscrimination policies in the placement of foster children with same-sex couples.
A three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the city which had ended a foster-care contract with an agency of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. That agency, Catholic Social Services, had declined to place foster children in LGBTQ households and sought an injunction that would have forced the city to renew their contract.
The appeals panel said "the religious views of CSS do not entitle it to an exception" from the city's nondiscrimination policy. The agency "has failed to make a persuasive showing that the City targeted it for its religious beliefs, or is motivated by ill will against its religion, rather than sincere opposition to discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation."
"The City stands on firm ground in requiring its contractors to abide by its non-discrimination policies when administering public services," concluded Circuit Court Judge Thomas Ambro, writing for the panel.

Catholic Charities to End Adoption Services in Boston

After two decades of placing children in state custody with adoptive parents, the Boston affiliate of Catholic Charities has decided not to renew its contract with the Massachusetts Department of Social Services, the Boston Herald reports.
The move comes on the heels of actions by the state's four Roman Catholic bishops to stop the charity from placing children up for adoption with same-sex couples.

Catholic Charities Of Buffalo Shuts Down Adoptions Over Same-Sex Couples

The Catholic Charities of Buffalo has announced the organization will end its adoption and foster care services because Jesus.
New York state law bans discrimination against same-sex couples when it comes to adoption or foster care, but the Catholic Churchs position is that marriage is only between a man and a woman.
Because, if you are catholic, taking care of children is paramount over everything...

(16,646 posts)I've thought this for a long time, that churches/religions really need to stay out of pseudo business/government activities. If they want to provide services within their own congregations, they can do that. But as soon as they start to try to provide them to the general public, it just creates too much conflict. Hospitals have similar issues when run by churches. Salvation Army often has rules for their shelters and services. Many soup kitchens have rules when run by churches. When those rules end up discriminating, then you've got an issue.

(692 posts)Should be allowed to discriminate against ANYONE for any reason.
If our government threatens to withhold taxpayer funding, these conservative/backward organizations suddenly become very tolerant!
