10 Black LGBT Icons Who Changed History

Check out these 10 LGBT figures who continue to leave a lasting impact on American culture.

Alvin Ailey
Josephine Baker
Ma Rainey
Lorraine Hansberry
Bayard Rustin
James Baldwin
Langston Hughes
Moms Mabley
Bessie Smith
Audre Lorde

This is from last year during Pride Month, and there is only a small blurb at the site, nothing in depth, but it is a great jumping off point for people interested in Queer African-Americans.

I also suggest Marsha P. Johnson.

I’ve read works by some of the writers named here, and their words are just powerful. But the experience that stands out for me is seeing performances by the Alvin Ailey Dance Group. The first time I saw Judith Jamison performing “Revelations,” I was just completely blown away.
