Oklahoma passes adoption bill critics say is biased against gay couples

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - The Republican-controlled Oklahoma legislature approved an adoption measure on Thursday that critics say discriminates against same-sex couples, non-Christians and single parents.

The bill would allow faith-based adoption agencies, including those that receive public funds, to turn away would-be parents on the basis of their marital status or religion and religious beliefs.

The bill’s proponents said the legislation would open the door for more child placement partnerships.

The state House of Representatives approved the bill by a 56-21 vote without discussion or debate, despite vocal objections and attempted parliamentary maneuvering from the Democratic caucus.

Opponents of the bill could mount a legal challenge. The Supreme Court in June 2017 reversed an Arkansas Supreme Court ruling and ordered all states to treat same-sex couples the same as heterosexual couples in the issuance of birth certificates. This and other court rulings have made adoption by same-sex couples legal in all 50 states.

2. There are places my wife and I won't venture

Unless we have to cross through. Those being the south, Oklahoma, Kansas and others. Unfortunately both of our families are in Missouri, so we have to venture there once or twice a year. But last time we went (to have our family wedding) we drove all night straight through Indiana. My wife was too afraid to stop. Sad times we live in. Not that I'm at a shocked by this.

4. I don't like even driving through states like this. I've known truckers that won't even stop in

some states. Fuel on one side and drive straight through.

5. OK leads the nation

in child abuse in foster homes and facilities. We've also been adding foster homes faster than any other state. The foster system alone is a fucking mess...and now this. It's been less than 100 years ago that Christian "authorities" came knocking on Natives doors in OK to take their kids to state-run boarding schools. As this state blossoms into a full-bore Theocracy I wonder when they will come knocking again for the kids of non-Christian parents and if the rest of the country will even care.
I know it will be struck down but they are going to keep trying and we are just one SC justice away from that slippery slope.
