Why this photo of political spouses and partners is making waves

By AJ Willingham,

(CNN)What's the first thing you noticed about this picture of political spouses and partners, other than Melania Trump's continued mastery of the color black?

It's probably the man in the back row, standing out against the nine women pictured. That's Gauthier Destenay, the First Gentleman of Luxembourg and the husband of the world's only acting openly gay prime minister.

Destenay and Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel wed in 2015, right after Luxembourg legalized gay marriage. When Bettel won the Prime Ministership in 2013, he was already in a civil partnership with Destenay and their sexualities were not a secret.

To be clear, Bettel isn't the only gay prime minister ever, just the only one in office right now. Former Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo and former Icelandic Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurõardóttir were both public about their sexualities.

So maybe he didn't travel with her. There are pics of them together with the Obama's, though.

BHO is a flat-out stud ... hard for me to imagine that most ladies wouldn't feel the same ... other than the Coultergeist/Stepford types of course.

His name is Joachim Sauer. He is a professor of quantum chemistry at Humboldt University in Berlin.

I can think of five reasons he wouldn't have come.

He doesn't feel comfortable around non-scientists.
He just didn't want to.
He had other things to do...like final exam week for his students, or rearranging his sock drawer.
He was fearful that being around the Trump's would lower his IQ.
Or, most likely, that he'd absorb so much radioactivity from being in the same town as Donald Trump that it'd throw off his experiments for the next three years.

or professional meetings, sometimes. To me, it undermines them, like look at my beautiful sexy shoulders, rather than focus on the topic at hand
Ivanka did it for the State of the Union Address too.
Little sense of appropriateness. White House dinner or Inauguration party is one thing, but serious business is another.
