I Want My Lesbian Bars Back

NYTimes:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/14/opinion/sunday/i-want-my-lesbian-bars-back.html?ref=opinion

Yes, I know lgbt bars of all sorts are disappearing, but women's bars more than most. And this is not news for about 17 years or so. And, imo, its driven mainly by tech, phones, and internet. But also economics as what were once inner city "ghettos" turn into comdomized high end real estate.

Maybe someone can share their opinion of Krista Burton, the writer of this Times article. Or what you think this means for "community". Or is there a business model for community?

social media may have a huge affect on the vanishing bars.

The gayest neighborhood in San Diego. Lots of bars within walking distance, at least a dozen or more. Over the years they have become more and more mixed. Lots of gays and lesbians but a lot of bi and straight people too. As acceptance has grown and barriers fell so did the walls that kept a gay/lesbian bar just that. I think straight women led the charge and quite frankly, the gay bars were just better!

I'm thinking of San Francisco where most SOMA establishments, for example, disappeared. But then Folsom Street Fair went inter-orientational. Hard to imagine what the City would do without that tourist draw. And when The Eagle Tavern threatened closure, all sorts of people joined in to save the institution.

Noe Valley is pretty much "gone" & the Castro is...well, it's a sort of gay Disneyland for the tourists. Still, it exists as a symbol, and an important one at that. Not long ago I drove my daughter through, taking Webster from Geary to Mission. When we came down the hill & crossed Castro her eyes nearly bugged out as half the houses for six blocks were flying Pride flags.

"I want to live here, it's..rainbowland" was all she said, but with a look of awe on her face.

It was so damn inclusive, too. I miss them.

The younger generation(s) don't need them the same way - they can find each other online. And they can disseminate info that way, too and even organize. But I don't yet understand how they find "family" if their bio one is dead to them.

Laughing and dancing all night as a group. Atlanta used to have 6-7 different women's bars, each one a different vibe... even a sports bar with sand pit volleyball outside. Really a loss to no longer have that larger community experience.
