Pope says gender theory part of 'global war' on marriage, family

Pope Francis warned on Saturday of a "global war" against traditional marriage and the family, saying both were under attack from gender theory and divorce.

Francis made his comments in an impromptu response to a question at a meeting of the small Catholic community in the ex-Soviet republic of Georgia.

"You mentioned a great enemy of marriage: gender theory," the pope said in response to a woman who had asked about it being taught in schools.

He did not elaborate.

Gender theory is broadly the concept that while a person may be biologically male or female, they have the right to identify themselves as male, female, both or neither.

Gender theory is part of a war on marriage? I thought the pope still remembered fractions.

One of the loopier theories put forth by religious conservatives to counter the mounting evidence that one in ten people may be sexually attracted to members of the same sex is that nobody is born with a set sexual preference and that somehow, everybody can be turned gay. It's a theory usually pulled out and used by fear-mongers and the frightened when discussing sex ed, but it looks like it's gotten a second life in the marriage debate.

I may have left math class behind me decades ago, but I still remember my fractions. If gay and lesbian activists say that one in ten persons are attracted to members of the same sex, I can still crunch my figures well enough to come up with the fact that the other nine in ten people are either attracted to members of the opposite sex or lack any libido to speak of.

Nine out of ten ain't bad, at least as far as social patterns and reproductive biology go. Subtract the hysteria and the hype and I don't see what people have to worry about.
