Jack Evans, who made history a year ago when he and his partner became the first same-sex couple to legally marry in Dallas County, died Thursday.

He was 86.

Evans and his husband, George Harris, were revered in the Dallas LGBT community, icons who inspired generations of gay men with their love story. Partners for more than 50 years, the two were inseparable, and often referred to as one unit: "Jack and George."

In early May, Evans was hospitalized with lung problems. Friends said Harris visited him daily, often making runs to Central Market for chocolate pudding or cake to satisfy his husband's sweet tooth.
