Gene Fox, who co-owns Fins Bar on Dauphin Island with his business partner, Doug Houston, has been "overwhelmed" by the response to a Facebook post he made Monday evening. ... Fox was upset, he said, because six of his customers witnessed a bartender at "another establishment that serves alcohol" on Dauphin Island tell others that Fins is a gay bar. "They heard this person say it in front of visitors to our island," he said.
After stewing about it for a few days, Fox fired back on social media. ... "It has come to my attention that a bartender at another establishment on Dauphin Island has been telling customers, 'Don't go to Fins because it is a gay bar,'" he wrote in a post on his Facebook timeline.
"Everybody try not to freak out all at once, but Fins is a gay bar. And a straight bar. Married people can come and single ones too. We welcome Republicans, Democrats and Libertarians. Christians, Jews, Rastafarians and Buddhists all can come. We have plenty of Baptist regulars that we'll never admit to seeing in a bar. We're not judgmental, unless it's about hair, shoes or fashion. So if you want a cold adult beverage, are human and can act right in public, feel free to stop in for a drink."
As of Tuesday afternoon, Fox's post had 700 likes, all of them "positive and supportive," he said. Among the best comments: Chandra Wright wrote, "Most American & Christian post I've seen in a while! Love it!"
