As for homosexuality – no change at all. How could there be, when the most powerful African bishop, Cardinal Robert Sarah, described gay rights and ISIS as twin evils threatening Christendom? (I’m sick of pointing this out, but opposing homophobia in the Church is not high on Pope Francis’s agenda. Fighting gay marriage is.)

I’m going to stick my neck out and say that conservatives basically ‘won’ this synod – they fought successfully behind the scenes and in the debates to block changes to pastoral practice that (a) they believe go against the teaching of the very anti-divorce Jesus of Nazareth and (b) would have outraged the increasingly powerful churches of Africa.

Naive liberals thought he was "progressive" because he said nice things about helping the poor (and possibly even really means it).

But it isn't a package deal.

Their cancer is fading in the west. We have the opportunity to choke them off. They need our money to survive. Leaving church and denying them a flock or the their slaughter and our money will show them.

3. Not surprised. The vatican will never change till its very survival depends on it

If you really want the Church to change, you have to criticize it and encourage others to join in the criticism. You have to encourage liberal catholics to demand change with the threat of no longer going to church and no longer giving it financial aid...and possibly leaving altogether.

Only once the spectre of Thanatos hovers over them will they change, and there will be much weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth by them before it is over.[/font]
