On Wednesday I found myself standing in front of another judge.

My hope was that this would be the last court hearing in a four-year journey to finally have our family legally recognized. I had butterflies and the cold sweats. We had submitted all of our paperwork and jumped through all of the hoops. The judge entered the chambers and within eight minutes and a strike of the gavel, our second-parent adoption was completed. We took a few photos, gave hugs to our attorney and our friend that witnessed the hearings, and we found ourselves in the car headed home. It felt surreal, but yet it was the most wonderful and exciting experience of our lives.

As you may recall, my husband and I are one of the seven couples that challenged the constitutionality of Nebraska’s ban on same-sex marriage. Our case was built on the simple argument that we are a "family" and that we want to be treated just like all other families. In our case, the marriage license was just a means to our ultimate goal of finalizing our daughter’s adoption – giving her two parents.

The journey has been full of highs and lows. As I reflect upon what has happened, I wanted to share what I have learned because the lessons have changed me forever.
