Same-sex marriage one year later in Virginia

In first year, Virginia issued 2,670 marriage licenses to same-sex couples

BY ANDREW CAIN | Richmond Times-Dispatch

RICHMOND — Virginia has issued 2,670 marriage licenses and 70 birth certificates to same-sex couples since the state began issuing marriage licenses to such couples a year ago Tuesday, according to Attorney General Mark R. Herring.

Gay marriage became legal in Virginia on Oct. 6, 2014, when the U.S. Supreme Court left standing a decision from lower federal courts that invalidated the 2006 amendment to the state Constitution defining marriage as between a man and a woman. ... The total number of marriage licenses Virginia has issued in the last year was not immediately available, so it was unclear what percentage the 2,670 to same-sex couples accounted for in the total.

The Associated Press reported Sept. 13 that Texas had issued an estimated 2,500 marriage licenses to same-sex couples since June 26, when the U.S. Supreme Court legalized the practice nationwide. That accounted for nearly 6 percent of all Texas marriage licenses during that span, according to state estimates.

Speaking of the Virginia turning point on Oct. 6, 2014, Herring said Tuesday that the “groundbreaking day” affirmed that Virginia “is open and welcoming to all and that discrimination would not be tolerated, and no longer sanctioned by the commonwealth.” ... He added: “Those are true Virginia values.”
