5. Gay man killed in Russia's second suspected hate crime in weeks
Mon Aug 12, 2013, 05:04 PM
Aug 2013
(Reuters) - A man was murdered in Russia because he was gay, investigators said on Monday, the second such killing in less than a month, and activists fear homophobic violence is being fuelled by President Vladimir Putin's conservative agenda.

Three men in a village on the Kamchatka peninsula on Russia's eastern coast stabbed and trampled the victim to death last week, the country's Investigative Committee said.

The suspects, who are under arrest, put the 39-year-old's body in his car and set in on fire, it said in a statement. Interfax news agency reported the victim was a senior administrator at an airport.

It is unusual for Russian authorities to link crimes with homophobia. Last month investigators in the southern city of Volgograd said a 23-year-old man was tortured and killed after revealing he was gay during a drinking session.

Activists said that killing was an example of rising violence against homosexuals, which they fear is being fuelled by a bill backed by Putin's allies in parliament that would ban spreading homosexual "propaganda" among minors.

Murderous rampage of gay-hate gangs
Has Sydney overlooked an 'epidemic' of up to 80 murders motivated by the hatred of gay men? Rick Feneley investigates.

David McMahon is the gay man who got away. He will never forget the summer's night when a teenage gang ambushed and bashed him and dragged him to a Bondi cliff where their leader told him: ''I'm gunna throw you over the side.''

In December 1989, the 24-year-old McMahon managed to escape and outrun his assailants among a mob of about 18 teenagers. They included four girls cheering on the boys.

Other men did not get away from murderous gangs on the same cliff-top path. These cases have been widely publicised and were part of a wave of ''poofter bashings'' in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

But NSW did not experience a mere wave of gay-hate crimes. ''It was an epidemic,'' says Sue Thompson, a lawyer and the former NSW Police Force gay liaison co-ordinator. The epidemic extended to the Manly cliff-tops and the northern beaches and regional NSW, and might add up to almost 80 murders....

Chilean Gay Man's Death After Brutal Attack Sparks National Debate
FEDERICO QUILODRAN 03/28/12 05:52 PM ET

SANTIAGO, Chile — Prosecutors in Chile asked for murder charges Wednesday in the death of a young gay man whose attackers brutally beat him and carved swastikas into his body.

Daniel Zamudio died Tuesday night, 25 days after he was attacked. The case has prompted a national debate in Chile over hate crimes, with President Sebastian Pinera saying from Asia that his government won't rest until a proposed anti-discrimination law is passed.

Four suspects have been jailed on attempted murder charges, some of whom already have criminal records for attacks on gays.

Hours after Zamudio's death, prosecutor Ernesto Vazquez formally requested that the charges be changed to premeditated murder, carrying maximum life sentences if convicted. He said the attack was clearly motivated by homophobia.... MORE

Nov 2013

When I was doored off my bicycle in what was highly suspected as an anti-gay crime. Reason being I kept having drive by "Faggot" yelled at my home, then the same spray painted on it, within a couple months of this happening.
I cannot identify my attackers. It came unexpectedly, so suddenly, and I was too dazed only to realized I was being repeatedly kicked in the head. It took a sort of hypnosis and drug enhanced therapy to recall what I could at a University PTSD study I participated in: but during that EMDR-like sessions I realized that I had been kicked in the head something on the order of 100 times by my attackers, I could smell strong whiskey and they were laughing and making homophobic comments.
I'm a radiologic technologist with over 20 years experience in CT and Xray. Unfortunately I have limitations to my physical ability to perform my chosen profession, due to pinched nerves in my neck. Insurance companies have rejected me for all plans. I have taken what Xray assignments I can. I'm fortunate not to have lost most of my cognitive abilities, but I'm not who I was before this occurence, by any long shot. I can no longer ride a bicycle or a motorcycle due to chronic dizziness. I've had dozens of chronic ear infections since. My right eye still has a partially detached retina. I've been opiate free for 6 months now, but still have some days I have trouble with old fractures.
I am documented TBI case now basically multiple post concussive syndrome. I still want to work, and live much like I did before this happened but it is very difficult. I have difficulty sometimes forming sentences verbally in proper syntax, and have to go kind of slowly at this. I refuse to become dependent on SSDI though, because I still don't really have a home. I sold the house there in Arizona, still have some ranch property in Radiator Springs! But this fucked up all my plans for building a home there. Its still a campout. I've finally paid off over 10,000 dollars worth of debt this attack caused me. State of Arizona refused me victims of crime compensation. (R) bastards.
I'm living on the edge of homelessness still, hoping I can pick up work soon. Only a few places have been understanding of my limitations, however, which are not severe, but ever present. I'm hoping to go back to one of the best jobs I've had, but things aren't as lucrative for rad techs as they were years ago.
In 9 days from now I go back to the ranch for a while, then off to El Centro hot springs to stay warm for the winter. Caleb and I will be living in a tent there till I can pick up work again.

We never knew what happened, because the family sealed off all contact, blamed his friends for the incident, and that was that.

I can't imagine how bad it was for him to wake up impaired and with no one he knew or cared about around him, cut off from all of his friends.

I regret that I didn't try harder to get in touch with him to this day.

Isa Shakhmarli, Azeri Gay Rights Activist, Allegedly Commits Suicide With A Rainbow Flag

Members of Azerbaijan's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community are in mourning this week after the unexpected death of one of their leading advocates.

As the AFP reports, 20-year-old Isa Shakhmarli was found dead Jan. 22 after reportedly hanging himself with a rainbow flag. Shakhmarli was the chairman of Azerbaijan Free LGBT, a Baku-based gay rights advocacy group, according to the report.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) has published an excerpt of a note that the LGBT activist apparently wrote to friends on his Facebook page.

"This world is not colorful enough for my colors," part of the note read, according to the report....

and I can't even name the victim of violence because my girlfriend and my friends forced me away. It happened on Montrose Ave in Houston, and a gay man was nearly beaten to death. One of my other friends got punched, but as a crowd we got dragged away.

It is unspeakable how you feel when you see a person get the stew beaten out of them. For no other reason than being themselves and having an opinion. A part of me died that day, and I am thankful for the friend that held me back because I was ready to dive in ... and probably would have gotten the shit beaten out of me, too.

Which makes me a coward, I guess, but I couldn't because I was unable to do anything.

Chilean man dies after alleged anti-gay attack

A Chilean man who had been in a coma for nearly six months after a group of men allegedly attacked him because he was gay died on Sunday.

Wladimir Sepúlveda passed away at a hospital in Rancagua, a city that is roughly 55 miles south of Santiago, the Chilean capital.

The 21-year-old had been in a vegetative state after a group of six men attacked him last October in the nearby town of San Francisco de Mostazal. The Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation, a Chilean LGBT advocacy group, said Sepúlveda’s assailants shouted anti-gay slurs at him as they kicked him and punched him in the head.

“The death of Wladimir Sepúlveda, who spent months fighting for his life, is a painful and sad moment,” said Álvaro Elizalde, spokesperson for President Michelle Bachelet, in a statement late on Sunday. “On behalf of the government I want to express my condolences through an embrace of solidarity with his relatives.” ....

Two weeks later, the same man struck her on the back of the head with a bar. “You are a girl, not a boy,” she remembers hearing. "I am going to beat you until you stop what you are doing with other girls.”
