French left-wing activist Clement Meric has been left brain-dead after he was beaten by a group of skinheads, reports London paper The Guardian.

According to Interior Minister Manuel Valls, Meric was attacked in a fight that broke out between two groups of people Wednesday night in downtown Paris. It is unclear how the fight developed, but political tensions have run high in France recently over the legalization of same-sex marriage, with antigay members of the extreme right often clashing with the police at protests. Wednesday’s attack has increased fears of far-right violence in the country with gay rights organizations warning authorities that LGBT people and their supporters continue to be targeted.

According to one of the comments, he has in fact died and they now suspects in custody. 19 and dead because he was a 'selfish activist who wanted his civil liberties.' Guess we know who is really to blame here, don't we?

1. I read this story earlier and it makes me sick to my stomach.

I know many people on DU do not hold my views when it comes to concealed weapons but I will say this, I plan on living to a ripe old age.

Méric was involved in the campaign for equal marriage. A video shot on 17 April, 10 days after the assault on de Bruijn, shows him in the front line of a counter demo. Half of his face is hidden by a red bandana and he’s holding a sign that says: ‘Homophobia kills.’

Méric’s murder was initially linked to the Jeunesses Nationalistes Révolutionnaires, a small but growing far-right group. The five people who have been arrested are said to be not members of the JNR but sympathisers of Troisième Voie, a small group created in 2010, for which the JNR do security. On Saturday, the prime minister announced that the JNR would be dissolved, and that Troisième Voie might be too.

Jean-François Copé, the president of the UMP, who attended the Manif pour tous demonstrations, called for the dissolution of all ‘extreme’ political groups, ‘of the far right, and the far left’, whose ‘sole expression’, he said, ‘is violence’.
