How about naming this "Sexual Minorities and Gender Minorities" group instead of the other acronyms?

this way, we wont have to deal with longer and longer acronyms and it covers a lot of ground but identifies our minority status.

i think its a better alternative than lgbtq or glbtq or lgbtiq and quiltbag.

i feel like this way, we won't accidentally leave someone out but will also stay focussed on the issues we do deal with

All we need to ensure is that it is inclusive and welcoming for all people.

You can call me anything, just don't call me late for dinner!

Seriously though, I'm fine with whatever the majority in this group thinks is best.

... putting "sex" back into the label seems like a step backward in the long effort to educate wider society on an important fact:

Being gay or lesbian is about so much more than a particular sex act.

Really too many people's minds go directly there, and just stop.

I'd hate to see that sort of thinking encouraged, even in such a seemingly slight way.

Here's where I am: I don't want to leave anyone out. I don't want anyone to feel left out. I certainly don't want anyone to feel last because this is a community of folks who (I hope) are trying bring sense to a nonsensical world. The wrangling over which letters should be first, middle, or last is really uncomfortable to me because of the foregoing.

When I was growing up, my granddad impressed on me his One Big Rule of Life: be fair. An all-inclusive title just seems fair.

At the end of the day, the name of this group is a name on a board. It doesn't define or redefine me. I'm good with whatever the group decides.

I like the idea behind "Sexual Minorities and Gender Minorities" but don't support renaming this forum (at this time). It seems to me that we're a lot more visible and easy to find as "LGBT" or "LGBTQI".

My guess is that people look for "LGBT" or some familiar variant when they arrive at DU. They should be able to find this group/forum as quickly as possible.

It occurs to me there's something missing from the nav menus. A simple javascript event handler for onmouseover would allow a tooltip to be displayed when a mouse hovers over any element in a page. That's actually "best practice" for menu design, especially where there are deep menus like DU navigation. I'm surprised that the admins missed this design element.

Displaying such a tooltip should go a long way into clearing up any confusion, I'd think.

But then again, I think like a programmer, not a viewer so YMMV

However, I don't honestly think in the long run it will make that much difference. Whatever consensus leads us to is okay with me.

and puts it onto issues being considered.

Also, it uses words rather than just letters.

As such I'd be in favour of the change.

I would phrase it as "sexual and gender minorities" or "gender and sexual minorities" personally, to remove the repetition.

Hail and well met! I hope you had a marvelous Gaudete Sunday. I did. A majestic calm in the midst of the maelstrom for this most Marian of Methodists.

"Gender minorities?" That opens it up to all men, since men are only 49% of the population.
