Dear Mr. and Mrs. Moore:

I’m Steven Goldstein, Chair of Garden State Equality, the statewide organization whose mission is to advocate equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. I write to you in the spirit of conciliation, seeking to meet with you about your remarks on Facebook which the LGBT community has found to be deeply hurtful. Please understand: We recognize your First Amendment freedom to post whatever you wish. But as the late Justice Potter Stewart said, there is a difference between what you have a right to do, and what the right thing to do is.

It was your constitutional right, for that matter, to post that "God invented AIDS" as punishment for LGBT people; or that single parents, and same-sex couples who are parents, destroy the "normal balance in a child's life." In fact, you had the constitutional right to post all your horridly anti-LGBT statements -- even if each of them was sweepingly inaccurate and wounding beyond measure.

I appeal to you as a matter of compassion and love. LGBT teens, and children being raised by LGBT parents, saw your posts and are devastated by them. Vulnerable young people believe you hate them without even having met them.

I would like to meet you and to bring some of those whom your statements hurt so badly. I am choosing to reach out to you first before our organization, which has 101,750 members across New Jersey, takes further measures. We believe it is important to reach out first.
