Video: Raggae star Beenie Man renounces homophobia, supports gay rights

The Jamaican reggae singer Beenie Man, whose songs have often been the subject of pronounced controversy over its violently homophobic content, has released a new video where he appears to renounce his anti-gay stance, and proclaims support for gay rights.

In his video, he says he respects each and every human being, “regardless of which race or creed, regardless of which religious belief you believe in, and regardless of which sexual preference you are, including gays and lesbian people.”

Claiming he is not the same person as he was twenty years ago, he says he wants to “respect and love [all] human beings.” He had previously released songs with lyrics including the lines, “I’m dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays,” and “Tek a bazooka and kill batty-fucker.”

Even if he doesn't really mean, just the fact that he's putting equality in his lyrics is huge.

Thanks for posting this, Will!

Beenie Man says: "Do not fight against me for some song that I sing 20 years ago."

Beenie Man has written and performed a number of songs that call for LGBT people to be killed. See the "Dancehall Dossier" http://bit.ly/fCob7c (not all of his kill LGBT" songs are listed in the "Dancehall Dossier&quot

All of Beenie Man's songs listed in the "Dancehall Dossier" were released in 2000 or later. "Batty Man Fi Dead" was released in 2004.

On December 5th, 2009, Beenie Man got on a stage in Kampala, Uganda and sang "Mi Nah Wallah," in which he says that he wants to cut the throats of all gay men. See http://bit.ly/aJzNbQ

Beenie Man signed a Reggae Compassionate Act agreement not to promote hatred and violence in 2007. What he does not mention in the description of his YouTube video statement is that he almost immediately denied signing this agreement. See http://bit.ly/Kc44Wi

Beenie Man's 12/05/09 performance in Uganda was a violation of his RCA agreement.
