Where do the socks go when I do the laundry?

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Ohio Joe (a host of the Creative Speculation group).

I always end up with unmatched pairs when I do laundry. It's like socks are somehow removed from the washer or dryer. I think there may be a conspiracy between the appliance industry and the Sock Industrial Complex to make my socks disappear.
