Yom HaShoah: Israel falls silent in memory of the Holocaust

OP note: In memory of my grandfather and his family who perished in the Holocaust.

Israeli Jews fell silent for Yom HaShoah as the nation paused to remember the 6 million Jews that died in the Holocaust.

Commemorations began on Wednesday evening and continue through Thursday, with the country coming to a near total standstill as sirens marked a two minutes’ silence at 10am.

Restaurants, shops, and places of entertainment are closed by law and television and radio stations are broadcasting special programming about the genocide.

The theme of this year’s reflection is ‘The Anguish of Liberation and the Return to Life: 70 Years since the end of World War II’, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a speech at Yad Vashem to liken Iran to Nazi Germany.

2. Getting Memory Right: Preparing for Yom HaShoah
Thu Apr 16, 2015, 12:39 PM
Apr 2015

Excerpt:

In New York City, the “Reading and Hearing of the Names” was conceived by B’nai Jeshurun in 1995 and then BJ Rabbi Rolando Matalon, invited the Manhattan JCC to expand it in 1998. The JCC now coordinates every synagogue on the Upper West Side, across denominations, to read names of Holocaust victims from 10:00 in the evening to 7:00 the next morning. It continues the next day at the JCC building itself, from 9am-7pm.

“What’s stunning,” says Rabbi Joy Levitt, the JCC’s executive director, “is that I’ve been doing this for 17 years, and we’re not even a fraction of the way through the names we gathered from Yad Vashem [the official Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem], which obviously don’t include all 6 million.”

The names are organized by country. “I remember that it took us four years just to read through the Jews of Belgium,” she notes.

“The process was death for death’s sake,” Rabbi Irving Greenberg writes in “The Jewish Way: Living the Holidays.” “Starvation, disease, terror, deportation, airless crouching boxes, chemical poisoning, medical experiments, freezing, burning, beating, whipping, burial alive, bayoneting, smashing heads, shooting squads, gassing — the kingdom of night, the triumph of death.”

4. Why Holocaust Remembrance Day Is Today
Thu Apr 16, 2015, 02:22 PM
Apr 2015

The date marks the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

The calendar year is full of dates that could be chosen for Holocaust Remembrance Day. Some, like January 27, the day of the liberation of Auschwitz, are recognized internationally. And, as Allied forces moved through Europe liberating Nazi death camps throughout early 1945, those dates continue to amass. So why is this Thursday, April 16, marked as Holocaust Remembrance Day in the United States and elsewhere?

As the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum explains, the date corresponds with the 27th of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar, which in 1943 — on April 19 in the Western calendar — marked the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Though the date may appear to move around from year to year, it’s always on that anniversary.

We're the other millions of victims of the Holocaust weak as well? Rubbish.

They were victims, but now that we are on the sophomoric subject of fighting and strength I guess that you must respect the Palestinians in Gaza when the fight from their ghetto / prison, right?

Are they the heros or strong Palestinians?

And before you reply try and think. They weren't weak. They were victims.

Adopting another people's struggle as ones own and making it their primary struggle in life doesn't really count.

Victims of the Holocaust as weak. That is extreamly insulting to anybody that has lived through it I would imagine. Are the remaining Holocaust survivors living in Israel weak?

Are the Palestinians living in their Israeli imposed ghetto strong when they fight back?

(and some other folks )worst nightmare.

It helped improve Antisemitism rates in other countries such as the USA and Australia and South Aftica too.... Of course there are those with no ties to any side in this conflict that got involved because of the fact that Jews are now strong and become "antiZionists" or so.

It used to be country clubs in the USA said no Jews allowed , then we became strong and now it's "no Zionist goods sold here.
