Satirist known as Egypt's Jon Stewart ends TV show
Doug Stanglin, USA TODAY 8:42 a.m. EDT June 3, 2014
An Egyptian satirist who patterned his wildly popular TV show after Jon Stewart's The Daily Show says he is shutting down the program because of the political climate and worries over the safety of his family.
Bassem Youssef, a former heart surgeon whose show began as a series of amateur YouTube clips, told reporters Monday that the channel that carried the program had been pressured to drop it, the BBC reports.
He declined to specify who had brought pressure on the program, but his decision follows the election of field marshal Abdel Fatah al-Sisi as president, replacing the president he had ousted, Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi.
The third season of Al Bernameg (The Program) had been scheduled to return last Friday following a mandatory hiatus during presidential elections to prevent influencing the vote, Time reports.
