having been sent on a few senseless deadly (and sujicidal) assaults myself, i can say that even the survivors are a little less likely to be so eager to try again.

how about a cease fire? get these guys together for negotiations. certainly the russian people want to end this as much as we do.

Ukraine is not willing to let Russia occupy its territory, particularly Crimea. I suspect that at some point Ukraine may have to cede Luhansk and Donetsk to Russia because of the large number of ethnic Russians in those territories, Ukraine will certainly be more resistant about relinquishing the remaining territory.

A temporary cease fire favors Russia as that will allow them to reallocate troops and make logistical changes without the threat of attack so I'm not expecting anything significant to change within the short term (next two months). There are too many variables to determine what the future holds in the war beyond that timeframe.

1. It's not a majority, never was.

According to the 2001 census, the Donetsk Oblast is inhabited by members of more than 130 ethnic groups.[57] The Ukrainian ethnicity is 56.9% of the population (2,744,100 people); the Russian ethnicity is 38.2% of the population (1,844,400 people).[57] The native language of 74.9% of the population of the Donetsk region is Russian, compared with 24.1% Ukrainian.[58] 58.7% of people of Ukrainian ethnicity considered Russian to be their native language.[58]

2. Most of those "ethnic Russians" hate Russia and Russian puppets. More so now than ever because of Russian atrocities in Donetsk and Luhansk, not the least of which was door-to-door "voting" in referenda at gunpoint.

3. Russian domination of Donetsk and Luhansk was strong until 1991 when the Soviet Union fell.
In 1989 there were no Ukrainian language schools in Donetsk.[59]
