because bamboo starch is used in Beyond Burgers. Evidently that person has never eaten a stir fry or walked down the international food aisle at the grocery store if they believe bamboo is some inedible wood. Fuuuck me.

the Vegetarian, etc. group, but seeing your post made me want to respond.

DU is not hostile to veganism. However, some folks, myself included, have a problem with the proselytizing of the lifestyle. I'd shut the door in your face if you were trying to get me to join the Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormon church, too.

Just eat what you want to eat, do a little superior dance about it, and leave the rest of us out of your philosophical beliefs.

If you don't want to discuss you shouldn't go to a discussion board.
You don't have to click on threads if you don't want to be a part of those discussions.

Or electric vehicles? Or preserving and planting trees to help with carbon storage? Or insulating their homes? Or switching to clean, renewable energy sources?

Do you think it is offensive to talk about how to reduce our carbon footprint? Is all talk about reducing our carbon footprint offensive, or only suggestions that might involve lifestyle changes and sacrifice?

If someone is actively trying to reduce their carbon footprint but knows that their effort will only be effective if it is part of a mass movement, is it offensive to tell them that they're free to do what they want, but don't try to sway anyone else?

like religious zealots, then yes, I do feel that way. There's gentle persuasion, such as simply setting an example, and then there's browbeating at every possible opportunity. Just because some of us object to the ham-handed techniques doesn't mean we're hostile either to the idea or the person espousing them.

How can we make our points in ways that you don't feel attacked? The facts on our side are pretty ugly when it comes to the animals and abuse and cruelty. We can't make that look pretty.

without making a strong appeal to "why doesn't everyone be like me?"

I'm sure that the Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormon missionaries who come to my door are absolutely convinced that if the whole world was like them, it would be a much better place. I respectfully retain my right to disagree with them, and slam, the door goes in their faces.

Bottom line is, we live in a world where multiple belief systems exist, and the sooner religious zealots and vegetarian crusaders get that point, the more harmonious our lives will be with each other.

Again, don't play the victim card if somebody disagrees with you. They have their beliefs about consumption of meat, eggs and milk, and you have yours.

Live with that.

Most of us aren't missionaries, and no, we can't casually mention it, not without replies accusing all of us of evangelism and a slew of "Mmmm bacon" and "People Eating Tasty Animals haw haw haw" responses.

You might think we live in a world in which we are the zealots. Most of us aren't, but there's the brush we all get painted with, so thanks for perpetuating that horseshit. YOU are the poor oppressed majority and disagreeing with your universal condemnation based upon stereotypes is also our right. That's not a case of playing the victim-- that's a valid response to the actual hostility on DU. You don't see the worst of it because it gets deleted, and that then gives you license to say that oh, gosh, no, I've never seen people on DU shitting on vegetarians and vegans. Do you believe that means it never happens?

Your proposition in GD that we should stay in our "safe space" indicates to me that you area actually the one in need of safe space. If you want a 'happy omnivore' group, by all means, start one. Oh, wait you don't need one because apparently you think you should have all of DU for that. Sorry, no. You don't have the right to tell us to sit down and shut up.

News flash: I am not remotely interested in your position on the consumption & commodification of animals, and I don't expect you to be interested in mine unless asked. Please bear that in mind when referring to us as "crusaders" and "zealots."
