Two Australian surfers just came up with a really neat way to help clean the ocean

It's called the Seabin, and it's the brainchild of Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski. They call it "a simple solution to our oceans' pollution."

Here's how it works.
Water and trash flow through the bin. The trash gets caught in the bin, while the water gets pulled up through a pump on the dock. Then a water pump separates oil from the water, and the water flows back down where it started, sans trash.

The trash is collected by simply pulling the Seabin out of the water and dumping it out.

I worry about pump maintenance though.

I'm guessing the pump would be shut off during the dumping process. Is it easy to start back up? Priming a pump can be a pain in the butt.

Additionally, as trash, especially bags, fills the bin does the water flow get reduced? If so, how much does that effect the pump?

It is a very cool invention, particularly for docking areas as intended. It's amazing how much trash i see around docks. As far as pumping gas at a dock it's impossible not to spill a little bit of it when done fueling and pulling the pump nozzle out of the fill tube. Drives me crazy, but try as I might there's always at least a few drops that fall into the water. One station dealt with this problem in a way by having paper towels by the pump so you can wad them up and try to catch those few drops, but I've only seen that at 1 dock station in my lifetime.

I think all these sort of creative devices deserve widespread attention. At this point, I think it would be hard to have too many gadgets/systems of this type.

quickly breaks down plastics into micro particles and it's these mico-particles that are causing the dire problems. The only solution is to stop stuff going into the ocean.
